ETSI Role in testing
 IMS interoperability is a key issue for boosting IMS (IP Multimedia
Subsystem) roll-out and more specifically network
interconnection between operators.
 Only via thorough testing in practical scenarios can operators
ensure operational excellence in a multi-vendor and multiprovider environment.
 IMS comprises a set of specifications designed to enable network
operators to implement IP-based networks that can carry services
for both fixed and mobile customers simultaneously.

ETSI Role in testing
 IMS was developed originally in the mobile world (specifically in
the specifications created by the 3rd Generation Partnership
Project, 3GPP), and was adopted for fixed networks by ETSI’s
TISPAN Technical Committee (Telecoms & Internet Converged
Services & Protocols for Advanced Networks).
 Advanced communications over the next generation network will
only be delivered if those same networks can interconnect.

ETSI Role in testing
 Testing support to all Technical Bodies early in the process
 Interoperability is best achieved when it is designed from the
beginning and not “bolted-on” at the end
 ETSI is recognized as world leader for Testing and Interoperability
 Validation of Standards through PlugtestsTM for 10 years
 Development of Test Specifications for over 20 years
 ETSI is between Standardization and industry
 Interoperability and conformance together
 Testing methodology
 TTCN3 and tool prototypes

TC INT (IMS Network Testing)
 Technical scope
 3GPP Release 8
 Interworking between IMS Core and AS for RCS services (this on
request from GSMA RCS IOT group)
 Continue basic call, MMTel, hold/resume, topology hiding, IMS
roaming testing
 Continue IMS to legacy PSTN/PLMN tests (add focus on Mg/Mj)
 Testing with IPv6

The awareness of on-going testing activities
 Knowledge about test activities will
give your company “the right
directions”
 Participating to PlugtestsTM events
will get your company in the “right
Place”
 Participants to Plugtest have
evaluated “experience comparable
to more than 6 months testing”
 Call For Papers has been issued (CL
2761) Call for Articles for an ETSI
Book on “Success Stories in
Validation and Testing”

The reuse of test specifications and results
• May sound
like the reinvention of
the wheel
•Test
Specification are
publicly available
•Test results can
be get by
participating to
PlugtestTM,
where in any
case Finale test
report is
produced
9
World Class Standards
Using publicly available test specification means
• To use
validated
test
specification
•To provide more
feedback to the
relevant 3GPP
TSG
•To shorten Time
to market.

IMS, from Standards to Practice -Technical Challenges
for New Service Opportunities
 Comparison of advantages and drawbacks of the IMS model compared
to the classical NGN
 New service opportunities and bringing services to the network quickly
 The importance of standardisation and standards
 Service options in a converged environment and example use cases

Will the EPC make IMS obsolete in NGMNs?
 Understanding the role of the EPC (Evolved Packet Core) in the
NGMN / 3GPP EPS (Evolved Packet System) architecture
 Key EPC architecture and functional capabilities
 Comparing EPC and IMS architectures and capabilities
 Why IMS: Investigating relevant NGMN applications and the needed
platform support
 Learning on EPC potentialities – Experiences from the OpenEPC
Testbed (www.openepc.net)
