Internet Research Task Force
Aaron Falk
IRTF Chair
IETF-73 – Minneapolis
IRTF Status
• Four Research Groups (RGs) are meeting this week
– Internet Congestion Control RG
– Delay Tolerant Networking RG
– Routing RG (Fri)
– Host Identity Payload RG (Fri)
– Mobility Optimizations RG
• Reviewing a rebooting Peer-to-Peer RG with the IAB
(tomorrow)
• IRSG composition is now public (on IRTF Chair
page)

IRTF Status
• Finalized definition of the IRTF RFC Stream
– Enqueued at the RFC Editor
• 4 IRTF RFCs published
– 3 from DTNRG on Licklider Transmission Protocol
– NMRG on SNMP Measurements
• draft-irtf-asrg-dnsbl
– Lengthy thread on IETF list
– To be published as an IRTF RFC on current practice
– Will include Security Considerations reflecting IETF last call
comments
– Interest in IETF work on reputation services will be raised in
DKIM tomorrow

Features
 Multi-party comms model
 Store-carry-forward of messages
 Extensible (URI-based) naming
 Supports multi-path routing and
caching with e2e disruptions

Delay-Tolerant Networking RG: Bundle
Protocol now tested in space
Code uploaded to the UK-DMC Disaster Monitoring
Constellation satellite operated by Surrey Satellite Technology
Ltd (SSTL). SSTL, Cisco Systems and NASA Glenn tested this
by downloading a 150MB fragmented image of the Earth using
the Bundle Protocol (BP).
NASA JPL have also just done an experiment with DTN that
involved using the BP and the Licklider Transmission Protocol
(LTP) out to a distance of 15-25 million km! They'll be reporting
results on that at Thursday’s DTNRG session.
TIME Magazine call DTN one of the
best inventions of the year.
The image transfer testing was
cited in that article.

Peer-to-Peer Networks
• Symmetric relationship between hosts
– Either can be client or server (seem familiar?)
•
•
•
•
Distributed
Scales to large numbers of nodes & users
Autonomous
Support anonymity
• Old P2P systems: USENET, BGP
• New P2P systems: BitTorrent, Skype
• New uses
– Realtime video, OS update distro
IETF-73 -- Minneapolis
11
P2P Research Questions
• Consideration of network structure (beyond ALTO)
• Security, privacy, anonymity and trust.
• Improving interoperation between different P2P
systems
• Information storage, reliability, and retrieval in P2P
systems.
• Better understand P2P system performance and user
behavior “in the wild”
IETF-73 -- Minneapolis

Practical Example
•
•
•
Localization techniques for peer selection optimization (ALTO)
Different approaches on how to compute and provide localization information
are currently explored.
ALTO charter being focused on the protocol, P2PRG proposes a forum where
localization techniques can be discussed and documented

Can ISPs and P2P systems co-operate for improved performance?
