Installing a
Network
Printer
Network printers work much like any
other printer except the data flow is
through a network. This means the
printer must have a Network
Interface, and be able to connect to
network media.
As with many printers, special
software may need to be installed
before physically connecting the
printer to the network. The add
printer wizard will give you several
options for installing your printer.
One option is to select the network
printer button. This then gives you
three directions to move.
You can browse for the printer,
insert the server\printer name, or
insert the URL: for the new printer.
The method used will be based
upon network protocols determined
by the system administrator.
Another method is to choose a
Local printer instead of a networked
one, then give it a specific Local
Port name. Again, the policy of the
network administrator will determine
which method you use.
By selecting a Standard TCP/IP
port, you will be directed to enter the
network address of the printer.
The Port name will be automatically
entered as you enter the IP address.
Do not change this name.
After completing the printer port
wizard, you will then select the
printer and finish the installation of
the necessary printer drivers.
All network printers have a NIC, or
network interface card attached.
You may need to install the IP
address for the printer either from a
printer menu panel or via software.
Even networks using DHCP for IP
configuration of host computers will
use static IP addresses for printers
and servers to ensure everyone can
find them on a routine basis.
If you are using an HP network
printer, then their Network Printer
Wizard may be useful in your
installation.
If the wizard does not find the
printer, you may install by specifying
an IP address, or the MAC
hardware address.
