PRINTING CONCEPTS AND TERMINOLOGY
Printer –physical device that prints
Logical printer- software config that is
created in windows. Represented by an icon
Printer driver- controls the printer
Print job-A document that windows has
prepared for printing
Graphical device interface- Windows
component that creates print jobs by
interpreting document info from an
application and combining it with the printer
information. Referred to as rendering.

PRINTING CONCEPTS AND TERMINOLOGY

Print server- printer is physically attached to a
printer server and shared out on the network.
Print spooling- saving a print job to the hard disk
before sending it to the printer. Increases
productivity.
Print router – When a user prints to a network
printer, the print router locates a remote print
provider that can be used.
Print processor- Software that makes any
necessary modifications to the print job and then
call on the GDI to further render the job.

PRINT JOB FORMATS
RAW- ready to be printed, no further processing
required.
RAW [FF appended]- Same as RAW, except that a
form-feed character needs to be appended to the
end of the print job.
RAW [FF auto] – Similar to the above, but
automatically adds a form-feed character.
EMF – Enhanced Metafile format.
TEXT – ANSI text data.

Not all features of the printer will be
available
The printer output will be incorrect

PRINTER POOLS
Printer pooling enables you to attach two or
more printers to a single printer
configuration
Allows you to divide the printing workload
among several printers of the same
manufacturer and model.
Uses a single logical printer and multiple
physical printers.

processing print documents into a format
that is suitable to be sent to the printer

the document prints

FINDING THE NAME OF THE SHARED PRINTER
If you don’t know the name of the printer,
you are given up to three search options:
If the computer is a member of an Active
Directory domain, you can use the Find A Printer
In The Directory option
Whether the computer is a member of a domain
or a workgroup, you can select the type, select
the printer name, or browse for a printer
If the printer is configured to be accessible
through a Web browser, you can select Connect
To A Printer On The Internet Or On Your Intranet

TROUBLESHOOTING PRINTER RESOURCES
Verify that the printer is plugged in and
turned on
Verify that the cabling connections are
secure
Make sure that there is paper in the paper
trays
Make sure that the printer is indicating an
error of some sort
