What is Bluetooth?
• Http://www.bluetooth.com
• Short range wireless LAN, Personal LAN “PAN”
• Rapid introduction of adhoc wireless networks
• enable devices to be connected wirelessly
• 3Com, Ericsson, intel, micosoft, nokia, lucent,
Motorola, toshiba, and more than 1300 manufactures
• By 2002 hundereds of millions of devices will be
bluetooth capable.

• voice data access point
– connect to mobile phone as modem (data)
– Mobile phone and the mic (voice)
• cable replacement
– receive e.mails using your mobile phone as modem
– no need for LOS (how about IR?)
• personal adhoc networks
– Bluetooth devices automatically synch.
– Adhoc network PC, PDA, Palm, Mobile phone, Microwave….

• PTP and PTM connections
• Piconet is the master
• Several devices can be connected to a piconet (up to
7 active simultaneously) and synchronized with their
piconet. (Slaves)
• Piconets can be connected together to form adhoc
network called Multiple piconet structure
• Power control function of distance and traffic
• range 10-100 meters
