Objective 1: Deploy an operational
IP Networks as a Service
Enable HEAnet and NORDUnet to provide IP network services to their
users through the Mantychore tools, enhancing their service portfolio; thus
providing virtual research communities with a useful service that can improve
their research activities and optimize the efficiency of use of eInfrastructures. Mantychore allows third parties to configure network
addressing, internal routing, firewalls and external routing policies.
Objective 2: Integrated Layer 1-3 services
Refine and expand the Mantychore services provided by means of
integrating, with the IaaS Framework, solutions for optical (Argia) and
Ethernet/MPLS networks (Ether); thus being able to provide integrated
services at layers 1-3 to the research community.
5
Objective 3: Marketplace for resource trading
Innovate in the business model used in services based on IaaS,
establishing a marketplace where all Infrastructure Providers can
publish their available resources with their usage conditions (SLA, price), and
all customers can automatically negotiate the SLAs getting the best resource
combination for their needs.
Objective 4: Carbon-neutral e-Infrastructures
Use Mantychore services to contribute to the research performed in the
GreenStar Network (GSN) project to enable carbon-neutral infrastructures.
Objective 5: Commercial Exploitation
Evaluate the likelihood of Mantychore services (open source based) in a
commercial telco environment and elaborate a business plan focused
on this service for telco operators.

• Disseminate studies, results and evaluations
reports about the deployment of IP Network as a
Service in NREN environment and further.
• Publicate tools, presentations at scientific
conferences, workshops, demonstrations at
specific academic events, and so on.
• Convince and mobilise the research community
about the benefits of IP Networks as a Service
WP2 Objectives (2/2)
HEAnet
• Disseminate exploitation plans of each partner
including joint marketing plans
• Contribute to standard bodies (for instance: OGF,
IRTF-NRVG and TMF) relevant to IaaS framework
• Propose extensions or enhancements of emerging
standards to support the IaaS framework.
• Liaise with related initiatives (GN3, FEDERICAII,
etc.)

WP3 Objectives
NORDUnet
• Represent initially three User Communities from a wide
range of users of research, health and education
networks. Extend during lifetime of the project.
• Consolidate the User Community and expand the use of
IP Networks as a Service.
– Extend the contacts with existing user organisations and projects
– Provide the necessary knowledge to users for achieving their
needs
– Search for new NRENs
• Provide training for NRENs and the User Community

communities
• WP6: Infrastructure resources marketplace
• WP7: Zero-carbon emissions virtual infrastructure
WP4 Objectives
i2CAT
• Analyse the user requirements (from NRENs and
virtual research communities). Some
requirements:
– allow users to configure and manage any type of
network (incl. L1, L2 and L3).
– improve the interface for the end users, so that it is as
simple and usable as possible.
• Implement the use user requirements and support
during the pre-operational phase
Software Architecture
• In-band & out-of-band
management channel
• Chassis support:
– Ethernet, loopback,
logical tunnel
interfaces.
– IP (v4 & v6)
• Routing support
– Static routes
– Dynamic protocols
(RIP, OSPF, BGP)
• Logical Routers
• Juniper support
– Junos 10.1
• Cisco and software
routers on the roadmap.

WP5 Objectives
NORDUnet
• Deploy the Mantychore services in an operational
environment
• Define management procedures so that users,
even though they are the ones using the
infrastructure, do not have to deal with the
problem of troubleshooting the network.
• Perform a study to analyse the feasibility of
Mantychore services in a commercial
environment, taking into account technical as well
as business parameters.

University of Essex
• Perform a set of studies about how the resources
will be published, how the customers will submit
the requests and how the resources will be
allocated on the customers.
• Simulate the Mantychore marketplace and the

HEAnet
• MANTYCHORE-GSN collaboration has the objective to design
necessary experiments and tests which eventually check the
viability of the movement of services (virtual machines (VMs
and applications) using flexible device configuration utilities
such as Infrastructure as a Service and Bandwidth on Demand
solutions.
• Perform the integration between GSN and MANTYCHORE
(physical integration between the GSN and the NRENs
infrastructure and also the services integration).
