Latin American governments adopted this
policy.
• Due to its high cost Latin governments
began to give up on
Agribusiness
• Giant commercial farms
• Government helped support through
irrigation and clearing forests
Gap between Poor and Rich
• Shantytowns in Mexico City and San Paulo
are among the largest in the World
• Liberation theology- Movement that
urged churches to become a force for
reform.
– Crusade for social justice and an end to
poverty by nuns and priests in Latin
America during the 1960s and 70s.
Death Squads
• Groups linked to governments in Latin
countries who killed when social unrest
became prominent
• Organization of American States (OAS)
– This group was formed in 1948 to promote
democracy, economic cooperation, human
rights.
U.S. Influence
• 1977, the United States signed treaties to
turn over control of the Panama Canal by
2000
• Nicaragua –Sandinistas, social rebels took
control from the ruling family
– U.S. backed the Contras to fight the Sandinistas
– Contras used guerilla tactics
Juan Peron
• President of Argentina 1946-55 and 76
– Increased government’s economic role
• Backed unions, raised wages, improved economy
• Many people fled Argentina because of suppression
of opposition
• Ousted in a military coup, after economic troubles
– Unstable government til elected again in 76
– Problems through 2003
• Leftist guerrillas, Falklands, economic crisis
