Vertical integration of QoS in
heterogeneous networks
Prof. Olav Lysne
Ass. Prof. Tor Skeie
What is QoS?
• The ability of the network to give some
level of guarantees on its performance to
connections, or sets of connections.
– Bandwidth (Kb/sec)
– Latency (milliseconds)
– Packet loss (percent)
– Variance in latency (jitter)
–…

Why Quality of service?
• To support recent and future multimedia-based
applications…

• Yes, but why is that difficult?

Thesis: IntServ - Ethernet interworking
Problem domain
• Achieving QoS across switched Ethernet by adhering
to the Integrated Services over Specific Link Layers
framework (ISSLL – RFC 2816)
Goal
• Implement and evaluate the ISSLL framework over
Ethernet
Approach
• The validity of the total solution to be tested in a
simulation model (OPNET, Ptolemy II, …) containing
full vertical integration of the QoS solution.

Thesis: Correlation of topology to performance
Problem domain
• How does topological measures correlate with
network performance?
Goal
• Evaluate network performance given certain
topological network parameters
Approach
• Test the network performance in a simulation model
(OPNET) and suggest better topological measures
