Network Architecture Evolution
 Legacy deployment are based on Ring topology or non-DWDM
 Multi layers with different traffic applications
 Mesh traffic within the ring
 Inter ring traffic is re-generated on the optical layer
 Inter ring traffic is generated on layer 2/3

Adaptive and Agile Network
 Network is continuous evolving
Layer 02/3
 New Applications – VOD, IPTV, Content delivery
 New Market Segments
 Open and integrated transport interfaces
 Routers and switches are having more layer one features
 DWDM SFPs are becoming more and more sophisticated
 Enhance fault isolation to Layer 1 and L2/3 network
Layer 0/1
 New transport Rates – 40G and 100 G
 Networks have to adapt to the early technology from
early stage specifications to mature technology
Tighter L1 and L2/3 Network Management

Planning the Mesh Network
Plan
 Upgrading Nodes
 Adding and deleting sites
 Wavelengths planning
 Wavelength blocking and reuse
 Mesh Protection
 path or span level WSS protection plans
 Circuit verification:
 Power, OSNR and dispersion
 Since the networks are continuously evolving, active planning the physical layer
and circuit growth is essential for network optimization
Manages the lifecycle of network design

Commissioning
Report
 One amplifier output power setting or changes
will affect other directions amplifiers
 Network-wide automatic power equalization
 Manual equalization becoming extremely
difficult
 Interconnecting WSS ports will affect the thru
traffic in other part of the network
Fully Automated Commissioning Hides the Complexity and
Guarantees optimal Network Performance

Conclusion
 Optical Layer is migrating from ROADM rings to all optical mesh
powered by the Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS)
 New applications driving continual growth and different traffic
patterns, and higher bit-rates on links
 Network Convergence Combined with L3 alien DWDM interfaces
 Active and pro-active network awareness driving new techniques
for directly monitoring DWDM networks
 As network growing in size and complexity, network intelligence is
hiding the complexity
As Optical Networks Migrating into Mesh
Network Intelligence is Becoming more Essential
