A non-profit advanced research network
Funded by MIC (Ministry of Information and
Communication) and KT since 1995
To provide high-performance networking services
To supports the R&D activity of new technology and
applications
6+1 router nodes across the nation based upon ATM
technology with advanced services deployed
37 member Institutes

1st Phase (’95~’97) : ATM Service
- Launched KOREN (95)
- Built optical backbone between Seoul and Daejeon
2nd Phase (’98~2001) : IP Service over ATM

Opened the Network Operation Center (NOC)
Interface with APII Testbed: JP/SG/US
Deployed 6 GigaPoP
Interfaced with other domestic R&D networks
(HPCNet/KREONET2 (NOC:KISTI)
3rd Phase (2002~2005) : Optical Internet based on DWDM
- Backbone : Tens of Giga BPS

APII Testbed : Asia Pacific Information Infrastructure Testbed
Background
- First proposed at the 12th APEC TEL WG(1995) jointly
by Korea and Japan
- APII Cooperation Center was launched in Seoul, Korea
(Oct. 1996)
Objectives
- To test interconnectivity and interoperability among the
test-beds in Asia-Pacific Region
- To Support joint R&D Projects and Application

APII Testbed
Korea operates three APII Testbeds
KR-JP APII Testbed
Started with 2Mbps in April 1998
Expanded to 8Mbps in July 1999
Will be expanded to 45Mbps or 155Mbps (2003)
KR-SG APII Testbed
2Mbps cables deployed in late 1999
Will be expanded to 4~8Mbps (2003)
KR-US APII Testbed/KREONet2

Plan for Joint R&D Projects
In 2002, Korea has set aside 1.9 million US dollars to
promote joint research projects using the TEIN
Planned several big-sized joint research project on
cutting-edge application service until the end of 2002
- 1 proposal selected as joint research project
Korea wishes that other countries will collaborate for
joint research opportunities on the TEIN/APII and
cooperate with each other
