The Children’s Crusade
• Who: Hundreds of children
• What: Children’s decision to march
downtown to discuss segregation with
mayor.
• When: May 3rd and 4th 1963
• Where: Birmingham, Alabama
• Why: Adults decided to send children in
another fight to end segregation.
Children’s Crusade Continued
• Because of the many previous attempts from the
adults to end segregation, and adults being sent
to jail causing them to have to miss work they
decided to see if the children could make a
difference.
• When the children began marching, they stated
“We shall overcome”.
• They were sprayed with high powered hoses,
and some were even attacked.
• Over 1,000 arrested and taken to jail.
