Investigation of the Relationship between Quality of Wireless
VoIP and IP Network Performance

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
I - OBJECTIVES
1.
Identify relationship between wireless VoIP
quality and IP network performance in a
campus environment
2.
Derive statistical correlation between network
performance parameters and voice quality
3.
Based on findings make recommendations for
large scale wireless VoIP deployment
II - BACKGROUND & MOTIVATION
1.
2.
Previous VoIP tests on wired networks found
strong correlation between network parameters
(jitter, network utilization) and voice call quality
Fig 1. Test bed configuration
Need a way to predict whether a wireless LAN
deployment is scalable to support voice services
IV - ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
1.
All the network performances should show a
certain level of correlation with voice quality.
From previous work, it is anticipated that packet
loss ratio presents a weak correlation compared
with other parameters.
2.
A strong correlation between access point link
utilization and voice quality may lead us to
conclude that special QoS parameters need to be
set in order to manage network performance for
acceptable voice quality.
III - METHODOLOGY
1.
2.
Test bed shown (Fig. 1) will allow us to generate
data and voice traffic, while all network
parameters will be continuously monitored
Various empirical methods will be used to obtain
correlation between network parameters and
voice quality
