Short Data Services
• Allows messaging to and from a host
• Up to 140 character messages
• Data on control channel as well as voice
channels if needed
– Simultaneous “voice & short data”

Examples of SDS Applications
Lancashire Police – UK
Use short data, via an interface on the actual
hand portable terminal to their gateway, to
enable car number plate and people checks
against the PNC (police national computer
etc).
Gardamoen Airport - Norway
In an environment where there is literally no
room for error, it is a genuine example of a real
mission critical communications situation
Carter Ground Fueling's SDTS Application
related to monitoring and control of the fueling of
aircraft.

Short Data Services Benefits
• Simultaneous voice and data communication
– Voice is never interrupted
– Offers users multi tasking opportunities
• Real time information which does not require
voice communication
• Optimised working routines
• Enhanced resource usage
– Reduces operator contact
– Faster information flow, through tailored applications

Circuit Data Services
• Concept used by telephone networks for over 100 years
• Connection maintained for the entire duration of the call
• Called circuit switching as connection is in both
directions
• Characteristics
–
–
–
–
Choose whether application or network provides protection
Typically only one user per time slot or channel
Application needs to handle lost/corrupted messages
Resources tied up, even when not carrying data
The wireless industry trend for data communication
is moving from circuit mode towards packet mode.

What is Packet Data Protocol?
TETRA PDP defines a dedicated control channel
(PDCH) for transporting packet data
• Mobile and fixed hosts are accessed via IP
address rather than ITSI address
• Multiple hosts can share the same PDCH
simultaneously. Contention is managed by the
PDP air interface protocol.
• Large IP packets are split into AL (Advanced
Link) segments for transmission on air
interface.

IP Packet Data Channel Allocation
• Dedicated or dynamic data channels?
Dedicated Data Channel
• Resource “ring fencing”
• Allocation of channel resources
• Options to “prioritise” user/groups for data
capacity

Dynamic Data Channel
• Voice & data flexibility
• Resource efficient
• Voice priority - returned when needed

Communications
– Each agency operate their closed network
– Individual user groups cannot “see” into
each others’ networks
– Data tunnel across the network, creating a
private & confidential link
– Functionality is available
for both voice & data services
– Data can be encrypted by the application

Examples of Packet Data Applications
Carris Bus – Portugal
In integration with the Automatic Vehicle
Location (AVL) system based on the Global
Positioning System (GPS), packet data
enables Carris to supervise and monitor the
day-to-day operation of their bus fleet.
The data is used for statistics and to predict
arrival displayed on information panels.

Data applications include AVL fully
integrated with the CAD system
and MDBA (Mobile Data Base
Access)
Inquiries to several legacy data
bases from Mobile data terminals
installed in police vehicles

Benefits of Packet Data Protocol
• TETRA PDP enables the connection of mobile
data terminals onto a user’s Intranet
• Packet data is the most cost effective solution
for delivering large amounts of data over a
wide geographic area
• Generic data solutions can be used, rather
than customised
• Even in PD mode any voice call can override
