Triple play – The internet ready home
Internet History
•
•
It all started from an idea for three computers . . .
"A network of such [computers], connected to one another by wideband communication lines [which provided] the functions of presentday libraries together with anticipated advances in information
storage and retrieval and [other] symbiotic functions.“
J.C.R. Licklider

The Internet has become the MOST prolific communications
mediums of all time
2009 estimated users are listed at 1,581,571,589 (23.6% of the
world population)1
No other medium has had the social and intellectual impact of the
Internet
Who did not use the Internet today?
Impact can only be measured by the types and numbers of services
available today

Buying a home is like buying an automobile
Many options but not all needed
Buyers are influenced by many sources
– Primarily network speed at the workplace
Many standard features were options in years past
– Carpet, Cabinets, Appliances
Now this is all standard or selectable
One more feature is added - INTERNET ACCESS!
What is the Internet Ready Home?
•
•
•
•
•
Accept any Internet appliance for Internet access
Based on structured wiring with . . .
Broadband connection to the Internet
– One connection for all users and services
Bandwidth is no longer a problem with 100Mbs for each
home
Examples of Internet Appliances

Quick note on Structured Wiring
•
•
We are discussing Ethernet/IP access, but . . .
Structured wiring is more than Ethernet
•
•
•
•
•
•
Coax cable for TV
Standard telephone wiring
Electricity
Audio speaker wiring
Ethernet CAT5 cable
Proper terminations
Structured Wiring and Home Networking

G.hn
Supported by ITU and the Home Grid Forum
G.hn the future universal wired home networking standard
worldwide
“A single, unified technology for multimedia networks over power
lines, coaxial cable, and phone lines has the potential to enable a
simple, easy-to-use means of networking devices in the home. We
believe ITU’s work is an important step towards eliminating
fragmentation in the industry and in achieving the vision of a
networked home.”
- Kurt Scherf, Analyst, Parks Associates, Dec 2008

Any developer not providing this type of connectivity/service will lag far
behind
Internet access is mandatory for new homes
People need and WANT access to information, social connections,
entertainment, etc
“Developers are realizing that they need to offer their customers more
than just news, weather, and sports“ – Robin MacGillivray, Pacific Bell
People will chose an Internet ready home over traditional home
IP versus analogue
If we use the correct hardware there is no need for the
End user to change legacy equipment. You can however use both methods
Of communications. Homes can be upgraded using standard devices to be
IP Enabled
