State of the Arts
• Existing standards, including 802.16-2009,
802.16m, does not support MS to MS direct
communication.
• Modifications to the procedure and signaling
exchange are required to supporting the HRMS to HR-MS direct communication.

Summary
• In this contribution, we provide a procedure
for 802.16n HR-MS in setting up direct
communication link with the help from
infrastructure stations.
Proposed Text
•
17.3.2 Direct communication between HR-MSs
When HR-MS associate to an HR-BS/HR-RS and the functionalities of direct
communication are turned on, HR-BS/HR-RS should check DSA_REQ
messages received from HR-MS and determine whether HR-MS direct communication
should be adopted for this follow. The HR-BS/HR-RS can use the destination IP
address and the HR-MS neighboring table maintained at the HR-BS to determine
whether a direct communication should be setup or not. If the HR-BS/HR-RS decides
that a direct communication should be setup between the source and destination, then it
should take following procedure to setup the direct communication link and perform
data transmission.
1) The HR-BS/HR-RS should hold on the DSA_RSP to the source HR-MS.
2) The HR-BS/HR-RS should allocate flow_id and radio resource for the direct
communication.
3) The HR-BS/HR-RS should transmit a DSA_REQ to the destination, which contains
the flow_id and radio resource information for the direct communication.
Proposed Text: Continued
4) On receiving the DSA_REQ, the destination HR-MS should reply with
DSA_RSP.
5) The HR-BS/HR-RS should generate a DSA_ACK to the destination HR-MS on
receiving the DSA_RSP. At the same time, the HR-BS/HR-RS should send the
delayed DSA_RSP to source HR-MS, which contains the same flow_id and radio
resource as sent to destination HR-MS.
6) On receiving the DSA_RSP, the source HR-MS should send a DSA_ACK to the
HR-BS/HR-RS.
7) After sending the DSA_ACK, the source and destination should start to synchronize
process on the direct communication link using ranging signals. The HR-BS/HRRS may signal a specific ranging code to the source and destination HR-MS. The
source HR-MS should send a ranging signal to the destination HR-MS first and the
destination HR-MS should response with a ranging signal after receiving it.
8) Once the synchronization process is finished, the source HR-MS can transmit data
on the direct communication link. The destination HR-MS may also transmit the
ARQ information on the direct communication link.
9) Synchronization on the direct communication link may be performed periodically.
The synchronization can be done similar as initial synchronization with a pair to
ranging signals.
10) Once the direct communication should be ended, the source and destination HRMS should send signaling to the HR-BS/HR-RS to terminate the direct
communication.
