Silk Road – overland trade routes
Marco Polo
Marco Polo – a
Venetian merchant –
traveled to China in
the 13th century. His
“discoveries” and his
accounts of his
travels captured the
attention of the
western world.
Marco Polo’s Route to China – and back
Polo learned that the civilization that had
grown up in China was, in many ways, far
more advanced than Europe.
Among the “discoveries” he made were:
Coal used for heating and for cooking
