Great Lakes Explorers
Created by Mrs. Groover
What is an Explorer?
► An
explorer is someone who travels into unknown
regions (or places). They are often the first person
to go to a particular place. Explorers do not know
what they will find when they get there.
► An
explorer’s journey
is called a quest. A quest
is when someone is
trying to find something.
Qualities of Explorers
► Explorers
have to be brave, adventurous,
and intelligent. They should also be strong,
healthy, and able to make decisions quickly.
These qualities are important because an
explorer doesn’t know what might happen
on his journey.
Reasons for Exploration
► There
were many reasons people explored
the Great Lakes region. Some wanted to
change the Indians’ religion. Some wanted
to claim land for their countries or establish
trading posts. Many explorers hoped to
become rich.
The Northwest Passage
► Some
explorers were looking for a water
route across North America. They called this
route the Northwest Passage. They wanted
a shortcut so it would be easier to get
things like spices and silks from places like
India and China.
Across the Seas
► Many
explorers came
from countries in
Europe, like Spain or
Portugal. They sailed
across the Atlantic
Ocean and landed in
the Americas. They
discovered new lands
and people.
An Explorer’s Fleet
► Explorers
used ships to travel across the
oceans. A group of ships traveling together
is called a fleet. Christopher Columbus, who
discovered America, had a fleet of three
ships. They were the Nina, the Pinta, and
the Santa Maria.
Ship Changes
► Ships
changed over the years. They went
from needing many oars and people to row
them to having more than one sail to make
them go.
Changes in Technology
► Technology
influenced exploration. Ship
builders were able to build sturdier and
faster ships to travel the seas more safely.
New maps were made as new lands were
discovered, so explorers had a better picture
of the world. There were many changes
from the time of the Vikings to the time
when many European explorers came to the
Great Lakes region.
The Great Lakes Region
►
Many explorers traveled
through the area we live
in, known as the Great
Lakes region. They
thought they could find a
shorter way to get around
America by going across it.
We have many places in
our region that are named
after famous explorers.
Exploring Our World
► Explorers
are adventurous, strong, and smart.
► Changes
in technology have helped explorers to
be able to go farther and faster.
► We
know more about the world today because of
people who have explored it over the years. We
continue to explore places we don’t know much
about, like space and the oceans so that we can
learn more about our world.
