Windows Disk Manager used to create FAT or NTFS file systems
Managed directly by SANmelody
Map file system volumes to application servers
Consolidation of disk resources – Greater Flexibility
Migrate disparate Direct Attached Storage (DAS) disk hardware off of independent Windows Application
servers and workstations to a centralized location managed by SANmelody Network services. Disks can
continue to be used as is (mapped back to the owning application server) or re-purposed and reconfigured into Virtual Capacity pools of available storage that will provide more effective use of the disk
resources and provide wider use and access to these resources.

SANmelody Application Support Services
Supports Immediate use and access of pre-existing Volume data – Save time
Mount existing Windows data volumes
Consolidate external direct attached storage (DAS) that is currently connected to
individual servers and workstations
Accelerate I/O performance of pre-existing data volumes and deliver to owning
Windows Application Servers and Workstations over existing Ethernet NIC’s
(iSCSI) or Fibre Channel
Introduces the benefits of SAN technology and storage virtualization
• Improve data redundancy
• Create high availability
• Migrate data to newer, faster or lower cost storage
• Increase storage performance
• All with one (1) reboot of servers and workstations
SANmelody provides the ability to manage and immediately utilize ("As is" )
formatted (NTFS/FAT) Windows volumes. Being able to utilize formatted
volumes (NTFS or FAT) allows the user the immediate use of preexisting data that resides on the file system of that volume.

SANmelody Application Support Services
Windows Disk Data Migration made easy – Re-purpose or Move Rapidly
External Physical DAS is moved to SANmelody Server
SANmelody presents original volumes with existing data to owning
application servers and workstations
Application servers run normal I/O loads to presented virtual volumes
Volumes can continue to be used or removed from service once data has
been migrated
•
•
Re-purpose for other uses (Virtual Capacity pools that can be allocated to any
server in the IP or SAN network
Retire from use
Windows file system data can be migrated transparently in real time

Simplify Your Backup Process – Gain Efficiency
- Disk to Disk [D2D] Backup/Restore
- Disk to Disk to Tape [D2D2T] Backup/Restore
Offloads User LAN traffic
Utilizes DataCore Snapshot technology
Easy delivery of volumes to the backup server
"Getting our backups back in control was the immediate need, but going forward the flexibility of
virtual capacity makes a huge difference in managing the constant demand for more storage.
SANmelody dramatically sped up disk performance by a factor of 3 times enabling the backup
window to shrink by over 10 hours. "
- Ann Schneider, IT Director for WEC

SANmelody Application Support Services
Co-existence with NAS solutions
Accelerate your NAS (e.g., Microsoft Windows Storage Server) and at the
same time create a SAN, all on the same storage server.
SANmelody delivers block level volume resources to co-existing NAS
solution
• Static Volumes
• Virtual Capacity Auto Provisioned Volumes (NMV’s)
SANmelody accelerates NAS backend I/O operations
SANmelody applies higher level storage features for virtual volumes being
delivered to the NAS engine.
• Synchronous Mirrors
• SnapShot
• AIM
NAS delivers file level resources over LAN to users and applications
servers
SANmelody delivers block level volumes over LAN (iSCSI) or SAN (FC)

SANmelody Application Support Services
Non-disruptive use of SANmelody features – Power up all your disks!
Easy
to apply SANmelody features (performance and function) to volumes.
Volume performance is improved by SANmelody’s built-in cache acceleration.
The volume can be delivered (mapped) to Application servers over the FC or IP
infrastructure.
Synchronous mirrors can be configured so that the data is mirrored to a
SANmelody partner in a high availability configuration. This provides continuous
access to the data in case a failure occurs to the data volume.
The Snapshot features can be used to generate a point-in-time snapshot of the
data volume. Then other applications can utilize the point-in-time version for
offline work.
Asynchronous IP Mirrors can be used to transmit the volume to a remote site for
disaster recovery or other remote site uses.
All features can be utilized non-disruptively in real time as the volume is being
utilized by the owning application servers.
The administrator has the choice of "in the SAN or out" when required - no lock
in, freedom to gain enhancements when needed.

Real Utility and Network Storage Services
"This approach to growing disk capacity makes real sense, but has never
been possible before. Now, Disk Servers have enabled storage to
become a utility function in much the same way as a print or file
server.“ – IT Director, Warwick University
“SANmelody makes it possible to serve up high-performance and
highly available storage.”
- CIO, Wasatch Advisors
