R2 Approach
Major release (4 years) includes minor “R2” update
Focus on feature refinement & addressing industry trends
Optional nature gives IT flexibility to deploy latest technology
No new CALs but delivers on SA value
Emphasis on compatibility for hardware, apps, drivers
This R2 Release
Joint development among client and server
First 64-Bit Only release
Addressing Industry Trends
Power
Virtualization
Multi/Many-core
64-Bit
Software applications designed for Windows Server 2008 may not
be automatically compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2.
Microsoft is recommending enterprises test and evaluate software
applications for full functionality on Windows Server 2008 R2.
ISVs, IT Pros and developers should test custom and packaged
software applications designed for Windows Server 2008 before
deploying on Windows Server 2008 R2.
Microsoft is working with ISVs to critical apps, such as anti-virus,
back-up and management software.
Microsoft is offering an easy path to WS08R2 certification at no cost to all
WS08 certified applications through the completion of the “Works with”
2008 R2 test.

Customer Evidence
By using improved Hyper-V™ technology and Remote Desktop
Services, Continental expects to increase system uptime, implement
new services in minutes instead of weeks, and save up to U.S.$1.5
million a year in hardware, software, labor, implementation, and
related operational costs
-Continental Airlines
“In our environment, a single physical server running Windows Server 2008
and the original Hyper-V can support about 10 to 15 of our standard
workloads. Windows Server 2008 R2 with the improved Hyper-V can
support more than 30. From a fixed capital asset perspective alone, that’s a
savings of $60,000 to $80,000 per Hyper-V server.”
-Continental Airlines

Make Users Productive Anywhere
WSR2/ W7 Solution
Situation Today
DirectAccess™
Office
Home
Difficult for users to access
corporate resources from outside
the office
Challenging for IT to manage,
update, patch mobile PCs while
disconnected from company
network
Office
Home
New network paradigm enables same
experience inside & outside the office
Seamless access to network
resources increases productivity of
mobile users
Infrastructure investments also make
it easy to service mobile PCs and
distribute updates and polices
Make Users Productive Anywhere
Situation Today
RSR2/W7 Solution
BranchCache™
Application and data access over
WAN is slow in branch offices
Slow connections hurt user
productivity
Improving network performance is
expensive and difficult to
implement
Caches content downloaded from
file and Web servers
Users in the branch can quickly
open files stored in the cache
Frees up network bandwidth for
other uses
Customer Evidence
“Taking advantage of the BranchCache feature in Windows Server
2008 R2, we can spend $20,000 rather than $50,000 per year on
bandwidth by postponing our expansion schedule.”
-Sporton
Using the BranchCache™ features in Windows Server® 2008 R2 and
Windows 7, CCO has simplified remote connection to its network and
speed the downloading of important files. It has cut costs by eliminating its
virtual private network and has seen a 43 percent savings in wide area
network (WAN) bandwidth.
-Convergent Computing
Increased server consolidation
Greater administrative control
Rich Web-based experiences
Performance and scalability enhancements
Unprecedented synergies with client OS
Anywhere access

.NET on Server Core
Remote access is now ubiquitous
Comprehensive anywhere access for Windows 7
and Windows Server 2008 R2
Seamless, always-on, secure connectivity; no separate
client software required
Utilizes networking technologies already in Windows
Server 2008
No separate action required to connect to corpnet
while remote. Corpnet is simply there.
Leverages policy-based network access
Enables desktop management regardless of client
location.

Client
Customer Evidence
With DirectAccess, CCO is saving about $40,000 a year by
eliminating its VPN and all its associated hardware, software,
licensing, and carrier charges
-Convergent Computing
Employee productivity has improved so much that he was able to defer
hiring additional sales and management personnel this year. “The $120,000
to $150,000 a year it would cost to fund these positions now goes straight
to our bottom line or gets distributed to current employees to help preclude
layoffs in the future
-Convergent Computing
Reduces Wide Area Network (WAN) link
utilization
Completely transparent to the user
Supports end-to-end encryption between
clients and servers
HTTP, SMB and BITS protocols are
optimized
