TERENA’s Mission
• Represent common interests and opinions of
membership
– Make political and industrial contacts.
– Lobby European Union and national governments.
– Liaise with other continents
• Knowledge Transfer
– Conferences (e.g. TNCs), Workshops and Seminars
– Developing informational, best-practice and training material.
• Technical Programme
– Develops, tests and promotes new technologies, services and
applications.
– Task Forces, Projects and Workshops.

Technical Programme
• Special Interest Areas (reviewed every two
years):
– Lower Layers (IPv6, MPLS, VPNs etc.)
– Quality of Service (including DiffServ)
– Videoconferencing and Streaming (Including IP
Telephony)
– Content Delivery, Indexing and Searching
– Middleware (security, AAA)
– Mobility
– Grid and Campus coordination

Task Forces (1)
• TF-NGN (started December 2000)
– Tests suitability of new networking technologies for use in future
European backbone, NREN or campus networks.
– Undertakes GÈANT Test Programme
– LBE, Multicasting, IPv6, network monitoring and flow measurement,
MPLS, DiffServ, optical networking, AAA, PERT, special projects.
• TF-CSIRT (started September 2000)
– Promotes collaboration and knowledge transfer between European
CSIRTs.
– Includes NREN, ISP, government and commercial CSIRTS.
– Establish pilot services (e.g. trusted introducer, tracker database) and
common standards and procedures (e.g IODEF).
– Assist new CSIRTs.
– Prevent miscommunication between NRENs, the EU, and national
governments (e.g. ENISA & Legal Handbook).

• TF-Mobility (started January 2003)
– Evaluate mobile equipment and software.
– Evaluate possible authentication and authorisation techniques (e.g.
web-based, 802.1x, VPNs)
– Define an inter-NREN roaming architecture.
– Investigate and address security issues.
• TF-Netcast (started March 2003)

Task Forces (3)
• TF-AACE (Started May 2002)
– Investigating issues related to deployment of authentication,
authorisation and other security-related services. Task force started
officially 1 May 2002.
– Focus on PKI.
– Close collaboration with Internet2 Middleware Initiative.

Projects – NREN Compendium
• Compendium has been published annually since 2000.
• Collection of relevant information about European NRENs:

Administrative data and legal form.
Number of users and market share.
Internal and external connectivity, and capacity of links.
Network traffic, load and congestion indicators.
Services, staffing and funding.
• Provides overview of network status in each country.
• Preliminary 2003 edition now on TERENA website.
• A good tool for lobbying governments and/or funding bodies!

Projects - SERENATE

Study the evolution of networking over the next 5-10 years.
– Includes technical, organisational and financial aspects.
– Investigating market conditions and regulatory environments.

Aims to produce set of recommendations for future research
and education networks in SERENATE countries

– Experience of various communities that have experimented with
"alternative" models of infrastructures
– Telecoms Operators' views on infrastructure and likely evolution.
– Present status of international connectivity in Europe and to other
continents
– Expected development of the regulatory situation in European
countries

IP Telephony Cookbook
• Telecoms costs in some parts of Europe are high.
• Number of initatives to use IP telephony, but these were not
linked.
• Coordination and support would be beneficial.
• ‘Cookbook’ initiative started in April 2003 and will run until
February 2004.
• Will investigate the various IP telephony projects in Europe.
• Aims to produce guidelines on:

• TRANSITS (TRAining of Network Security Incident
Teams’ Staff)
– EC-funded project led by TERENA: July 2002 – June 2005
– Develops and maintains course material for training CSIRT staff
– Holds training workshops (with travel funding for NAS countries)
• SEEREN (South-Eastern European Research &
Education Networking)
– EU-funded project led by GRNET: December 2002 – June 2004
– TERENA is a dissemination and liaison partner – linking
SERENATE, TF-NGN and Internet2 with SEEREN.
– Establishing a network infrastructure (2-34 Mbps) between
Romania, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, FYROM
Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Serbia & Montenegro.

Other projects (2)
(co-funded by European Union)
• 6NET
– EU-funded project led by Cisco: January 2002 – December 2004.
– Has built a native IPv6-based network for gaining experience of IPv6
deployment and migration from existing IPv4-based networks.
– Used to test new IPv6 services and applications, as well as
interoperability with legacy applications.
– TERENA leads the dissemination work package: website, workshops,
etc..
– Most results are publicly available!
• SCAMPI (A SCAleable Monitoring Platform for the Internet)
– EU-funded project led by TERENA: April 2002 – September 2004.
– Developing a PCI-based adapter card for monitoring at 10 Gb/s.
– Includes dedicated API for developing standard applications.
