SNMP 101
Simple Network Management Protocol
Network Element Monitoring &
Configuration Control
Before we begin…
This series of slides provides a basic introduction to
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) as well
as an overview of Evertz’s SNMP-enabled product
portfolio
SNMP is the protocol that Evertz uses for complete
monitoring and configuration control of Evertz SNMPenabled gear, through application software and/or
network control panels (NCP) . This gear is easily
identified by looking for:
There are many SNMP resources available for further
review. Please contact Evertz if you would like to find
out more!

SNMP Basics…

SNMP is:

An open-standard, network communications
protocol


Introduced in the early 1990’s within Telco industry
for network management and gained wide
acceptance


SNMP is not proprietary
SNMP exists for vast number of networked devices across
numerous equipment manufacturers (even some HVAC),
has plenty of support and promotes equipment
interoperability
Developed by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task
Force)

Why not CMIP?

Common Management Information Protocol


CMIP is superior to SNMP




Developed 10 years ago and designed to supercede
SNMP
Built-in security system with authorizations, access control
and security logs
Multi-tasking protocol with a single request
Better network reporting
Why not CMIP?



SNMP ease of use keeps it the de facto standard
CMIP runs on ISO protocol stack while most LANs run on
TCP/IP, and most LAN devices only support SNMP
CMIP more complicated to implement and train

So, back to SNMP…2 Areas of Interest



Agent (Server)
A server facilitates communication between the
manager and the modules (managed objects)
Agents communicate with products within a chassis
as well as with the manager through a MIB
Manager (Client)
The user interface (UI) portion to SNMP; commonly
referred to as the Client

Management Information Base (MIB)

Management Information Base (MIB)
 Consider the product MIB to be a
product “blueprint” or “dictionary” of
addressable parameters

Parameter OID2
Parameter OID3
Parameter OID4
Parameter OID5
Parameter OID6
MIBs contain Object Identifiers (OIDs)
Parameter OID7
Unique address specified per configurable
or monitorable parameters
Parameter OID8


Human and computer readable
Defines and describes addressable objects
Objects provide the interface between
manager and agent
Product MIB
“Resides” in the Agent…facilitates
communication, but is not the Agent

Simple SNMP Commands

GET - recover the value of a named variable
 GETNEXT - recover the name and value of
variable that occurs after the named variable
 SET - assign a value to the named variable,
can also trigger events in the device
SNMP Messenger…
 TRAP - allows device to send unsolicited
information to managers. Consists of an
integer, variables and values.
