... Look around the lab... All the computers
are communicating via a NETWORK
But in this network, we can also share
information with the world thus creating a
“network of networks”
This resulting inter-network of computers
and connections is called the Internet

•A web page is a collection of text and pictures that tells the author’s story.
•Your web page will allow people to look at what you have put together by
using a web browser. Ie. Internet Explorer, Firefox
•Features such as “hyper links” which allow you to jump to other features on
your page or other locations in the world can be placed on your web page.

A set of documents that use the Internet
structures but which are accessed only locally
The same browser (Eg. Internet Explorer)
that works on the Internet will also allow you
to look at local files and pictures.
You can write a web page for use on the
school intranet, but the world wont be able to
see it.

Remember, a network connects computers, so that
they can share resources.
 Basic structure of the web -> think of it like a city.
 Like a house, every computer has a unique address so
that it can be found. Example, 201.123.99.214 The
numbering system is like a postal system, narrowing
down from country, to institution, and ultimately to
an individual computer. This is called your IP address
(Internet Protocol)
 Information is exchanged by sending small packets of
data that contain the computer address of the
recipient.


Ideas on a web page can be linked to other ideas on
other pages!

This is accomplished using hypertext

Hyper referes to the idea that the text is non-linear.

Example: Rather than following the text from the
beginning to the end, you can click on a hypertext
linked word and it will take the user to another web
site.

See what I mean?


It is the web standard for transmitting and
storing all of the data on the internet.
Hyper Text Markup Language

Used by the first browser called mosaic


Text means you will be using plain text files.

Markup Language means you will e adding “tags” to the text file to tell
the browser how it should display the text. For example <B>This will
bold the Text</B>

In you browser, click on “View” and then “Page Source” to see HTML
Tags.

Location or Address Bar

Use to enter the address of the sites you want to find. This
address is called a URL (Universal Resource Locator)

The URL is made up of a number of components. The first part,
http (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol), describes the service being
used. http is the service used to send HTML web pages. Other
services include “ftp” for file transfer.

The next part (example: www.tsn.ca) locates the server computer
which has all the HTML files to view.

When you connect to the internet, you are using two
computers.
Your home computer is connected to a computer
operated by your Internet Service Provider (ISP)
Your computer is called the client.
Your ISP’s computer is called the server.
The server provides connections with other servers
around the world.


Various companies have developed search
engines that keep indexes of the information
available on the internet.
People who make web sites, register them on
search engines and provide “key words” so
people can find their site.

Online etiquette is often referred to as "netiquette".
Remember: You are communicating with real people,
not machines.
Rules:
1. Never give your whole name, address or phone
number to anyone. You never know who is lurking in
the shadows
2. Don’t flame anyone. This means don’t use
profanity or make rude comments.
3. Dont’ spam. This means don’t advertise unless you
have the permission of our Internet provider.
4. Never write all in caps. IT IS EQUIVALENT TO
SHOUTING (and it’s hard to read)
