The benchmark was performed using a Storwize V7000 system with 48 x 300GB SAS disks. 1.2TB database with 700
concurrent clients were used in the benchmark. The same test was performed
with compressed volumes and non-compressed volumes.

Real-time Compression Experiences
• Client comments
– “It’s an exception to have a new piece of software
work so well”
– “This [beta test] was worth our time and we
discovered that it really performs up to the
marketing hype”
• Client compression achieved
– VMware volumes: 76%
– Oracle: as much as 90%
– Lotus Domino: 70%
• Client performance experiences
– Storwize V7000: Performance neutral
– SVC: One client saw 2.5x better throughput with
Real-time Compression for an Oracle workload

Advanced Function Meets Extreme Performance
Virtualizing storage with SAN Volume Controller helps
make new and existing storage more effective. SVC
includes many sophisticated enterprise-class storage
functions. FlashCopy provides “instant” snapshots for
backup, Real-time Compression helps improve effective
capacity, and high-performance thin provisioning helps
automate provisioning.
IBM FlashSystem delivers extreme performance driven
by MicroLatency and is a durable, high reliability
enterprise class family of flash storage systems that
are easy to integrate. FlashSystem leverages IBM
patented Variable Stripe RAID technology to maintain
performance levels while at the same time protecting
data integrity and usable storage capacity.

IBM Storwize family breathes new life into existing storage infrastructure
Internal Storage is Virtualized
 Enables rapid, flexible provisioning and simple configuration changes
 Enables non disruptive movement of data among tiers of storage,
including Easy Tier
Storwize External
Virtualization Software
 Enables data placement optimization to improve performance
External Storage is Virtualized
 Capacity from existing storage systems becomes part of the IBM storage system
 Single user interface to manage all storage, regardless of vendor:
Designed to significantly improve productivity
 Virtualized storage inherits all the rich base system functions
including Real-time Compression, FlashCopy, Easy Tier, thin provisioning
 Move data transparently between external storage and
the IBM storage system
Hitachi
EMC
HP
NetApp
TMS
 Extends life and enhances value of existing storage assets
“Storage virtualization has been key to providing efficient
and cost-effective storage solutions for our data center”

Bridgeworks SANSlide
• IP connections may have long latency
– Long distance connections
– Many network “hops”
• Traditional solutions transmit data, wait for response,
transmit more data
– Results in poor network utilization, as low as 20%
– Worse as latency becomes higher
• Bridgeworks SANSlide technology integrated with
Storwize family IP replication
– No separate appliances required
– No additional cost
• Uses artificial intelligence technology to transmit data streams in parallel
– Automatically adjusts to changing network latency
– Improves network bandwidth utilization up to 3x
– Independent of application or data type
• Deploy less costly network infrastructure
• Speed replication cycles for better remote data currency and faster recovery

Value of IP Replication with
Bridgeworks SANSlide Technology
Major customer requirement
•Simpler: Eliminate FC-IP routers and
network optimization appliances
•Independent: Eliminate CPU and
management overhead of using serverbased solutions
•More efficient: Significantly improve
network utilization
•Flexible: Delivers benefits regardless
of
workload or data type
•Cheaper: Deploy less expensive
networking infrastructure and eliminate
need for dark fibre
•Better: Reduce impact of disasters by
copying data more quickly
