Implementation of new
communication technologies into
the learning process
1.) Computer network labs at FIIT
2.)
xDSL
IPv6
IP Telephony
IEEE 802.11 (WiFi)
3.) The future…
Computer network labs at FIIT
Established in cooperation with NetAcad (Cisco
Networking Academy Program)
currently two full-featured labs in rooms D105 & D113
Computer network labs at FIIT
Lab equipment in room D105
Adtran Atlas 550 PBX, ISDN and Frame Relay switch
14 routers (Cisco 2500, 2600XM, 2811) featuring:
Synchronous and asynchronous serial interfaces
FastEthernet interfaces
Token Ring interfaces
IEEE 802.3af compliant 4-port FastEthernet switch module
FXS and FXO interfaces
ISDN BRI and E1 PRI interfaces
SHDSL interfaces
full routing functionality – RIP, OSPF, BGP for IPv4 and IPv6
enhanced security via AAA and IPSec support
Computer network labs at FIIT
Lab equipment in room D105 (cont.)
4 layer-3 switches – Catalyst 3560, Catalyst 3550
GBIC and SFP support for high speed uplinks
full layer-2 and routing functionality
Catalyst 3560 provides IPv6 and IEEE 802.3af support
9 layer-2 switches – Catalyst 2950T
full featured layer-2 switch including enhanced security
support
using AAA and IEEE 802.1x, supports hardware filtering
using ACL, full STP support and more…
4 PIX 515E hardware firewalls
6 Cisco 7940G IP Phones
Miscellaneous accessories – external modems, web cameras
Computer network labs at FIIT
Lab equipment in room D113
12 routers (Cisco 2500, 2600) featuring:
Synchronous and asychronous serial interfaces
Ethernet and FastEthernet interfaces
routing functionality for IPv4
8 layer-2 switches – Catalyst 2950
2 Cisco 1232AG Access points
2 Cisco 1310 Wireless bridges
Cisco PCI and Cardbus Aironet wireless NICs
xDSL
Currently taught in CCNA4 and CCNP2 courses
We are using SHDSL – why?
we do not have DSLAM (we are in the process of getting one)
we are aimed mostly on how upper layers work
Typical xDSL network
xDSL
Current xDSL network at our lab
We do not have DSLAM nor ATM backbone
Using SHDSL we can simplify xDSL network to:
AAA
Server
RJ-11
CPE
BBRAS
On our simple xDSL network we can demonstrate
RFC 1483 bridging, PPPoA (RFC 2364), PPPoE (RFC 2516), AAA
Students use:
PPPoE (it is predominant today)
Authentication (no Authorization or Accounting now)
IPv6
Currently taught in CCNP1 course
However covers only how IPv6 address looks like and no
practical exercises
We think the time has come to start talking about IPv6 because:
will replace IPv4… sooner or later
IPv6 is already deployed on the Internet
Study material on IPv6
RFC documents of course… but they might be hard to read
Your local bookstore
Study material also developed by Peter Mesjar as a part of final
project in easy to learn format. Also used as direct support for
practical exercises developed by him for CCNP1 course.
IPv6
Current IPv6 practical exercises
Lab 1 – Enabling IPv6 on Cisco IOS and learning the core
functions
Lab 2 – IPv4 and IPv6 coexistence using tunneling
Scheduled IPv6 practical exercises
6to4 mechanism and anycast routing
RIPng, OSPFv3 and BGP routing
IP Telephony
Currently taught in IP Telephony course
Good introduction to the world of POTS, ISDN and VoIP for the
price of using proprietary protocols (SCCP instead of SIP)
Current IP Telephony network at our lab:
IEEE 802.11 (WiFi)
Currently taught in FWL course
Now in version 1.2 based on IEEE 802.11b standard
We use IEEE 802.11g
One part of the current WiFi network at our lab:
The future…
Courses currently taught at RCNA FIIT
CCNA1, CCNA2, CCNA3, CCNA4
CCNP1, CCNP2, CCNP3, CCNP4
Courses scheduled to start in september 2006
IP Telephony, FWL
Courses scheduled to start in near future
Network Security 1, Network Security 2
We are constantly enhancing our labs with new
technologies
We are in process of finding funds for buying ADSL equipment
and optical equipment for PON
Thank you!
