 Today
we will be learning about life in
Ancient Rome during the height of the
empire.
 *The
Romans
borrowed many ideas
from the Greeks.
 Main
Difference:
• Greek – loved to talk
about ideas
• *Romans – ideas were
only imp if they could
solve everyday
problems

Statues
• *Greek made to look perfect
• *Roman were made to look
realistic



Romans also turned to the
Greek for ideas in building.
*Romans were the first
builders to use VAULTS
(curved ceilings).
*The Romans were also the
first people to use
concrete.

Roman Writers
• *Used many Greek ideas in
the works.

Virgil
• *Took some ideas from
Homer’s Odyssey.

Aeneid
• *Virgil’s poem which
describes the adventures of
Aeneas.

*Aeneas
• Represented the ideal
Roman- brave, selfcontrolled, and LOYAL to the
gods.

Horace
• *Wrote satires (poke fun at
human weakness) and ODES
(poems that express strong
emotions about life.

Livy
• *One of Rome most famous
historians, wrote the History
of Rome.


*The Roman’s also liked
plays especially funny
ones.
*Latin was the language of
the Romans.
 Galen
• *Greek doctor,
brought many ideas to
Rome.
• *Liked anatomy study
of body structure.
 Ptolemy
• *A Roman scientist
• Mapped over 1,000
different stars
• Studied the motions of
the planets.



*Ptolemy incorrectly
placed the Earth at the
center of the universe.
*Roman engineers
built a system of roads
& bridges (some are
still around today).
*They also built
aqueducts to bring
fresh water to the
cities.

Roman cities were laid out
like a square.
• *The forum was in the
center and temples and
public buildings were built
around it.

Wealthy Romans
• *Big comfortable houses
w/beautiful gardens.

Poor Romans
• *Lived in 1 room apartments.

*The city of Rome was
crowded and dirty.


People threw their garbage
on the streets and thieves
prowled the streets at night.
“Bread & Circuses” (Free
Grain & Shows)
• *The gov’t provided ppl
entertainment to keep their
minds off how bad their lives
were.


Romans loved to watch
chariot races and gladiator
contests.
*Gladiator - Roman slaves
that fought animals and each
other.




Roman families were
large.
*The father was the head
of the householdPaterfamilias.
*Families w/$ sent their
boys to school to learn
reading, writing, &
rhetoric (public
speaking).
*Girls studied at home.



*At 14, a Roman boy
celebrated b/c a man.
He burned his childish
toys and started
wearing togas.
He could start working
or join the MILITARY.




Women had some rights.
*Empress Livia , wife of
Augustus, was involved
in Roman politics.
Rich women had more
rights than poor women.
*At the theater women
had to sit in a separate
area away from the men.





Slaves had many
different jobs.
*Most worked in
homes, mines, fields,
and workshops.
*Some were teachers,
doctors, & artisans.
Slaves could buy their
freedom but this didn’t
happen often.
Some slaves rebelled.
 *Spartacus, a
gladiator, led 70,000
slaves against Roman
armies.
 *Two
years later he
was caught & he and
his followers were
crucified (nailed to a
cross until dead).
 Greek
gods were
given Roman names.
 *Some
Roman priests
studied the stars,
insides of dead
animals, & the flight
of birds for meaning.
 *The
Roman gov’t
allowed ppl to
practice their
religions as long as it
didn’t threaten the
gov’t.
 *Those
that did faced
severe hardships like
the religion of
Christianity.
