Discovery:
During their unit on the Ancient Greeks, the children
will:
• Think and question like a historian, exploring
different kinds of historical sources.
• Check the fascinating myths of the Trojan War and
the Minotaur against primary sources and record a
Mythbusters radio show.
• Research the lost city of Atlantis using a variety of
means.
• Consider what it was it like to go to school in
Ancient Greece. Appreciate the role of education in
the lives of the Ancient Greeks. Learn about their
school days, as well as some of the great thinkers of
this period!
• Learn about the development of democracy from its
creation in Ancient Greece to systems used today.
During their unit on the Ancient Romans, the
children will:
• Learn about the history of Rome – legend and fact –
and understand where in Europe Rome is, and how
the Romans came to extend their influence and
create such a large and influential empire.
• Learn about life in Britain before the Romans
arrived and how the arrival of the Roman armies
affected the Celtic tribes. Take on different jobs and
roles in a Celtic village. Debate whether to resist or
collaborate and create Celtic shields.
• Role play a Roman invasion.
• Understand the power and organisation of the
Roman army and ask and answer historically
relevant questions about why it was so successful.
• Decide whether it was better for the Celts to
collaborate or resist the Romans – what advantages
were there to collaboration?
