EUROPE BEGINS
When the Roman Empire fell, Europe was left in
the hands of several different “barbarian tribes”.
These tribes eventually settled into areas and
developed kingdoms.
They settled next to important rivers and sea ports.
Several different groups set up kingdoms in
Europe including the: Visigoths, Celts, Angles,
Saxons, and the Franks
The Franks
The Franks settled into what is now know
as France around 400 A.D.
Their king became a man named Clovis.
Clovis is important because he became a
Christian emperor (actually a Catholic
emperor).
CLOVIS THE
CATHOLIC EMPEROR
WHEN CLOVIS DIED HIS SONS TOOK OVER. THEY
DIVIDED THE EMPIRE. THEN THEIR SONS DIVIDED
THE EMPIRE. THIS CONTINUED UNTIL THE EMPIRE
HAD GOVERNNORS WHO WAGED THEIR OWN WARS.
CHARLES MARTEL
Charles Martel wanted to reunite all of the
land that had been divided. He also wanted
to rid Europe of the Muslims that had
recently moved into Spain.
With the support of the Pope, he took his
army into Spain and defeated the Muslims
at the battle of Tours.
CHARLES MARTEL
WAS ALSO KNOWN AS
THE “HAMMER”. HE
WAS INSTRUMENTAL
IN DRIVING THE
MUSLIMS OUT OF
EUROPE.
Charlemagne
Charlemagne was the grandson of Charles
Martel.
He conquered much of the northern and
western part of Europe.
He continued to build on the empire that his
Grandfather had begun.
He moved the capital of the empire to
Aachen
On Christmas Day A.D.
800, the pope began to
crown Charlemagne the
emperor. He was
supposedly just going to
pray, and did not know
that he was going to be
crowned emperor.
Chances of him not seeing
the huge, gold encrusted,
bejeweled crown sitting
there is very small.

REVIEW
What occurred in Europe after the fall of the
Roman Empire?
Who was the first leader of the great Frank
empire?
What emperor defeated the Muslims at the
battle of Tours?
Who was the emperor who reunited the
Frank empire?
After Charlemagne’s Death
Charlemagne’s empire broke up after his
death.
After years of invasions and destruction, one
leader, Otto I, began to unit the leaders of the
area around present day Germany.
To reward him, the Pope made him emperor
and gave him land in the north part of Italy.
This empire became known as the Holy Roman
Empire.
HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE
The Holy Roman
Empire did not
last very long,
nor did it have
much of an
impact on
anything. It was
not very
powerful, and
ended up being
divided shortly
after the
unification
attempts in the
1100s and the
1200s.
The Holy Roman Empire
The Holy Roman Empire came about because of
necessity more than anything else. Many different
barbaric peoples were invading Europe and people
needed protection.
However, it was never a fully united empire. The
pope, along with the kings and other wanted power.
This kept people from working together to achieve a
solution. Germany and northern Italy remained
divided until the late 1800s.
Rise of the Catholic Church.
During this time the catholic church began
to be a major player in the power structure
of the world.
The Catholic Church had most of the
“educated” people working for it. Therefore
all religious ceremonies had to be
completed through the Catholic church.
More about the Catholic Church to come.
