What was it like to live in Rome?
The Rich
Famous for overdoing things
Dinner on individual couches and
occasionally had slaves feed their food to
them
Often had entertainment in their own
homes
The Poor
Most people lived in poor housing
◦ No running water, toilets, or kitchens
Food and drink had to be carried upstairs
Rubbish and human waste had to be
carried down
◦ Or dumped out the window
Slavery
Most wealthy famililes owned slaves
Relationship between household and
household slave was usually trusting and
tender
Slaves on farms or working in mines were
in terrible conditions
Slaves usually came from being captured
at war

Poor people were provided with wheat
grain by the government
The govt also provided shows called
circuses
◦ Could be violent
◦ Animals fighting animals/humans
◦ Humans fighting humans
Gladiators were the highlight of these
circuses

Most were slaves who were captured in
battle
Some free men who enjoyed the fame
If wounded the gladiator’s life was up to
emperor
This event took place in the Colosseum
Family Life
Romans had a strong sense of values
Father was the head of the household and
wealthy fathers could sell any family
member into slavery
Women's freedom depended on wealth
and status of husband
