 486 A.D. Frankish leader Clovis I defeated the last
Roman army in Western Europe
 By 530s, the Franks controlled much of France and
Germany
 717 Charles the Hammer united the Frankish
lands. He was the guy who stopped the Muslim
advance into Europe at the Battle of Tours.

Rise of Charlemagne
 786- Charles grandson, Charlemagne became king of
the Franks and spent 46 year reign increasing his
power and territory, reuniting much of the original
Western Roman Empire
 Appointed nobles to rule local regions and sent
educated officials to ensure nobles were ruling fairly
and well
 Was a devout Christian and wanted a unified
Christian Europe and worked with the Catholic
church to spread Christianity.

The Rise of the Church
 Charlemagne helped protect Rome and Pope Leo III. Leo
was from lower social class and Roman nobles believed
pope should also be from nobility, so accused him of
things he didn’t do, threatened to kill him.
 Leo appealed to Charlemagne for help. He sent Leo back
with armed escort and he followed few months later. B/C
of his presence nobles didn’t bring charges and Leo took
oath of innocence that nobles had to accept.
 Christmas Day 800 A.D. Charlemagne was praying in
church and Leo took a crown from altar, placed it on his
head , declaring Charlemagne the new Emperor of the
Romans.
