Historical/Biblical Significance
• Augustus was convinced that belief in the old gods had
made Rome great.
• He encourage his subjects to return to the worship of
these gods, doing so, Augustus had restored eightytwo temples in Rome alone.
• He became the Pontifex Maximus (highest priest) in the
state cult.
Background Information
• 68 B.C. - A.D. 14
• He was first Roman emperor (born Gaius
Octavius), is the son of Gaius Octavius, and Atia,
Julius Caesar's niece.
• He was adopted by his great-uncle Gaius Julius
Caesar in 44 B.C.
• Marcus Antonius (Anthony), had married
Augustus sister, Octavia, and left her for
Cleopatra.
Myths and Stories
“Returning now to the beginning of the story,
there is no record of Caesar Augustus' decree that
‘all the world should be enrolled’ (Luke 2:1). The
Romans kept extremely detailed records of such
events. Not only is Luke's census not in these
records, it goes against all that we know of
Roman economic history…”

“…In Josephus' account of the Roman census in 6
C.E., he writes that those people taxed were
assessed of their possessions, including lands and
livestock. But Luke has Joseph and Mary making a
three-day journey, away from their home and
possessions in Nazareth, to register in their
alleged ancestral home in Bethlehem.”

Meaning that there should be people of the court
that will come to your house and keep a recording
list of what you own and have taxes paid on them.

• The Sphinx was the personal symbol of
Augustus, and he used it on his seal ring.
Strengths
• He was very daring and influential.
• He left most of his estate to his soldiers in his
army.
• He was a benevolent dictator.
Weaknesses
• He worshiped the Pagan Roman gods.
• He allowed himself to be worshiped as a god.
• His ego.
Quote from Macbeth
• “There is none but he Whose being I do fear,
and under him My genius is rebuked, as it is
said Mark Antony’s was by Caesar.”
• “Around him, my guardian angel is frightened,
just as Mark Antony’s angel supposedly feared
Octavius Caesar.”
• Meaning that Macbeth fears Banquo will kill
him for his sons to be of throne. Mark Anthony
was killed by Caesar.
