How the expansion of the United
States relates to the expansion of the
Roman Empire, and why the U.S.
should be cautious with its next
purchase.
The U.S. Expansion
The First Expansion
• 1782 - The U.S.
receives land from
Britain
• The land stretches
from the
Mississippi to the
East coast.
Louisiana Purchase
• 1803 - U.S. buys land from France that was
called the Louisiana Purchase.
We Take A Great State
• 1819-1820 - U.S. gets Florida
Huge Expansion Comes About
• 1845-1848 - US
buys the Oregon
Purchase, and
takes Texas,
Arizona, New
Mexico, and
California
The Finishing Touches
• 1867 - U.S. gets Alaska from Canada
• 1898 - U.S. gets Hawaii
The U.S.
declare all of
their main
land states,
not
territories.
The Roman Empire Expansion
Huge Expansion
• By 270 BC the Roman Empire took Almost
all of Italy. The Empire is colored in pink.
Rome Takes All Of Italy
• In 220 BC, the Roman Empire controlled all
of Italy, including some islands off of its
coast.
The Punic Wars
• Carthage tried to
take the Roman
Empire, but lost
the war and
surrendered its
land in 208 BC
A Huge Expansion
• By 52 BC, the
Roman Empire
expansion had
retrieved almost all
of its land, taking
Gaul, Hispania,
Northern Africa, and
some of Asia. Pink

More Africa And Asia
• By 25 BC, the
Roman Empire
controlled a large
portion of the
northern coast of
Africa, and lots
of Asia Minor.

The Greatest Extent
• The Roman
Empire’s final
expansion
occurred by
conquering east of
Greace, Britain,
and taking
complete control
