800 B.C. – A.D. 43
- Between 800 B.C – 600 B.C. two groups of Celts from
Central and Western Europe , the Brythons and the Gaels,
invaded the British Isles.
- the Brythons settled on the largest island, Britain (after
whom the country was called)
-the Celts were farmers and
hunters
-organized in tightly clans /units
- Celtic languages – Welsh, Irish

- the tribes, each with a „king“ or a chief, never united and
often fought with one another
- they built hilltop fortresses (e.g. Maiden Castle)

tribes were noblemen, warriors,
druids – priests, healers and
musicians
- the Celts are known for their art – bronze swords and
shields, (found in the River Thames as sacrifices), jewellery

- The first Roman invasion was led by Julius Caesar in 55
B.C. (not successful)
- Britain was conqurered by
Emperor Claudius in A.D. 43
- main revolt was led by Queen
Boadicea – a national heroine
and a symbol of courage

- Roman occupation of Britain lasted nearly 400 years –
permanent effects were few
- people did not adopt Latin language

- Hadrians Wall – a defensive wall marking the northern
frontier of Roman Britain and the northernmost limit of the
Roman Empire, to separate the Romans from the barbarians

4th century – became state religion
- It differed from the pagan beliefs of the Celts
- The Celtic people were free to workship as they wished
