1. The authors of this
book have thought
of their own
criteria for a
successful army.
2. How similar are
their criteria to
yours?
How is this similar to a football
team?
BEST EQUPMENT: The best equipped soldier in
the army was the legionaries. The legionaries
were armed with a javelin, sword, dagger and
shield and protected by body armour.
TOTAL COMMITMENT: All soldiers were
volunteers staying in the army for 25 years. The
army became their family and the best soldiers
became centurions in command of 80 men.
GOOD REWARDS: They were well paid and had
good food, hospital treatment and baths living
better than most civilians. They were also give
10 years pay as a pension.
MOBILITY: Straight roads were built so they
could move from place to place quickly.
EXCELLENT TRAINING AND FITNESS: Soldiers
trained long and hard and had to be able to
march 32km carrying two swords, a spear, shield,
cloak, two pots, bowl, spoon, spade, pick, axe,
food and spare boots.
INTERNATIONAL SQUAD: as the Romans
conquered new territory they got the best local
fighters to join the roman army. 9000 British men
joined the army after Britain was conquered, and
sent to fight all around the world.
DISCIPLINE AND TACTICS: Roman soldiers were
forced to be loyal, if there was a mutiny whole
battalions would be decimated, killing every
tenth man. They also had clever battle tactics.
Why did this make the roman army a
success?
1.Let’s watch some
adverts!
2.Which Marine advert
do you think is the
best? Why?
3. Why do you think do
an advert in the style of
“Go Compare” would
be inappropriate?
1. You are going to do an advert for the television!!!
2. Your aim will be to persuade people to join the
Roman Army.
3. You will use the information on pages 30/31 of the
text book to help you.
4. You will write a script of the advert in the back of
your books.
5. You have 20 minutes and should refer to at least four
things that the Roman Army could offer a soldier.
6. You must also refer to what skills the Roman Army
may require from an potential applicant.
7. You will produce a Storyboard advert for homework.
8. This will be performed next lesson.
GOOD LUCK!
