the development of Greece?
2. What aspects of culture did the Mycenaeans
adopt from the Minoans?
3. How did aristocracy differ from Oligarchy?
4. What did the Council of Five Hundred do?
5. Till what age were Spartans expected to serve
in the Military?
Discussion
• Using Athens and Sparta as a model explain
how the structure of each society dictated their
original governments and why each City-State
had a different form of government
Impact of political systems
 Reexamine the forms of government chart on page 128.
From each of the political standpoints address the following
problem:
 There is a dispute involving a wealthy landowner, Philipus,
and one of his poorer neighbors, Emaeus. Emaeus claims
the landowner wants to take part of his land to increase the
nobleman’s own estate. Philipus says his expenses have
increased, and he needs the additional land. In making your
judgment you should consider the following.
Who in each group has the power to make a decision and what is
the basis of that power?
Which side in the dispute are they likely to favor and why?
What is your judgment likely to be?
 With the person sitting next to you create a chart that
would illustrate the similarities and differences in the four
procedures and their outcomes
Athens: Dawn of Democracy
• Reviews
– “Both explains the positive aspects of Ancient Athens without avoiding the
contradictions at its heart: a democracy reliant on slavery and imperialism to
underpin its political system. A culture much celebrated for its rationality yet
equally based on magic and mystery cults.”
– “A good historical review of Athens in terms of democracy. They used the
standard shots of the sites as they are now, historical re-creations of sites,
artifacts, interviews with historians, and narration. The narrator, and the others,
were mildly condescending and critical on Athens. They judged them with 21st
century (Western, liberal (technical meaning), democratic ideals). In addition,
the narrator is a babe.”
• As you watch take notes for the discussion we will have afterwards:
– How does a true democracy work?
– Does the democracy of Athens reflect the democracy of the U.S. why or why
not?
– What are the benefits to a true democracy and what are the downsides?
– How/why was Athenian democracy shaped the way it was? In other words how
did where they lived, there ambitions, the every day needs effect the outcome of
their democracy?
Reflection
• In what way is government related to society?
