Goals for the webinar
• Help potential applicants send the very best
proposals that are responsive and compelling

History of GenerationRx
• Since 2010 the Cardinal Health Foundation has
partnered with The Ohio State University
College of Pharmacy and many others to
address prescription drug abuse
• Over $5m has been committed
• Visit www.GenerationRx.org to access all of the
resources developed to-date
History of GenerationRx – three goals
• Take medications exactly as prescribed
• Store medication in secure locations
• Promote safe medication practices and teach
others to do the same

+ 90% of participants say they won’t share their
medications nor take others’ medications and that
they will store them properly

Influencing prescribers – why?
• Since 1999 over 165,000 deaths from overdoses
related to prescription opioids.
• 4.3 million Americans use prescription opioids
non-medically each month.
• 259 million prescriptions for opioid pain
medications were written by healthcare providers
in 2013
(CDC Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain – United States 2016)
Grant Eligibility
• Any 501(c)(3) non-profit organization
– Hospitals or health systems, community health
centers, federally qualified health centers,
pharmacies, prescriber or healthcare provider
associations, substance misuse prevention groups
• Don’t have 501(c)(3) status?
– Collaborations are encouraged
Funding Details
• Requests up to $35,000 will be considered
– If the work cannot be completed for less than your
requested amount, please include the details in the
budget narrative.
• Anticipate up to 20 grantees
• Grant amounts will be based on the review
committee’s scores and the scope of the project
• Funding period is 12 months
Goals
Engaging patients and their healthcare
providers to reduce the number of opioids
prescribed for pain management AND
produce better patient outcomes AND
better pain management.
Objectives
• With the patient, develop comprehensive
treatment plans for pain management.
• For patients who are prescribed opioids,
encourage patient engagement
• Measure progress in terms of morphine
equivalents, pain management, and patient
satisfaction.
• Share best practices and outcomes
Grant Criteria - Tips
• Limit the proposal to five pages not including
the cover letter, budget, driver diagram and
other graphics
• Be very specific about
– Previous experience
– Baseline data
– Protocols
– Outcomes anticipated

• Consider including a driver diagram
• Include a timeline that addresses all aspects of
the work including IRB approval, if needed
• Quantify anticipated outcomes in terms of
– morphine equivalents
– patient perception of pain management
– physical functioning

Geisinger will assist with proposal review and
grantee support
Use of Funds
• Funding can be used to support people, education,
training, patient education materials and technology to
connect patients to their care

• Proposals are reviewed for completeness and fit
against the published criteria for the program
• Review committee with subject matter expertise
on prescribing and misuse prevention will review
and score each application
