What is Nebulizer
•
•
•
•
•
Nebulizers are used in treating respiratory conditions where the
medication must be inhaled.
Nebulizers are available in small portable versions for home use and
travel.
nebulizer is used instead of a metered dose inhaler as it provides a
better flow of medication to some patients
In medicine, a nebulizer is a device used to administer medication in the
form of a mist inhaled into the lungs.
Nebulizers are commonly used for treatment of cystic fibrosis, asthma,
COPD and other respiratory diseases.
What is Nebulizer
•
•
Nebulizers use oxygen, compressed air or ultrasonic power to break up
medical solutions/suspensions into small aerosol droplets that can be directly
inhaled from the mouthpiece/mask of the device.
The definition of an aerosol is a "mixture of gas and liquid particles,“

- Compressor Nebulizer
•
uses the compressed air to create the mist which carries the medication to the lungs.
- Ultrasonic Nebulizer
•
•
•
•
does not use compressed air
the device operates off of sound vibrations.
Sound waves at a high frequency are created by a crystal and transform the liquid
medication into a fine mist that is inhaled.
generally for home use and available in a portable style.
- Nebulizer Mask
•
•
To guarantee the proper amount of medication is administered to the patient.
The only option for babies and young children is the face mask.
- Nebulizer Mouthpiece
•
•
•
•
Placed in the patient's mouth and inhaled in slow, deep breaths.
A method called 'blow by' is sometimes used for young children and babies while
they are sleeping.
This method uses the mouth inhaler and allows the mist to blow out while the
child breathes it in without inserting the mouthpiece in the mouth
Unfortunately, a child does not inhale enough medication through the blow by
method and it should not be used for treatment
Application of Compressor Nebulizer
•
connected by tubing to a compressor that causes compressed air or oxygen to flow at high
velocity through a liquid medicine to turn it into an aerosol, which is then inhaled by the
patient.
•
were used for patients in hospitals who have difficulty using inhalers, such as in serious cases
of respiratory disease, or severe asthma attacks. However some manufacturers like CITIZEN
have also managed to lower the weight of the Compressor nebulizer down to 400 grams ,
and thereby started to label it as a portable and home use device.
Application of Ultrasonic Nebulizer

more portable nebulizer.
have an electronic oscillator generate a high frequency ultrasonic wave, which causes the
mechanical vibration of a piezoelectric element.
This vibrating element is in contact with a liquid reservoir and its high frequency vibration is
sufficient to produce a vapor mist.

Medicines used in nebulizer
•

Nebulizer medicines are liquid. For convenience and safety, most nebulizer
medicines are delivered in single-dose vials.
Albuterol
Intal
Atrovent
Pulmicort Respules
Steroids
Bronchodilators
Beta-2 agonists such as salbutamol, albetrol
Ipratropium bromide
Nedocromil sodium and etc are also used.
Which patients should be treated by nebulizer
_ Respiratory patients in hospitals and emergency rooms
_ Babies and young children
_ Elderly patients, including COPD patients
_ Patients receiving a medication that can only be delivered with a nebulizer
_ Any patient for whom MDI or DPI devices are insufficient
_ patients suffering from cystic fibrosis, asthma and other respiratory diseases.
Choosing a Nebulizer
Is the nebulizer approved for your medication?
Make sure your nebulizer and medication are compatible. Check the patient instructions for each.
You should never attempt to nebulizer Medications that are not intended to be nebulized.
How much noise does it make?
Think about where and when you might need to use the nebulizer.
new models are almost silent.
Where are you likely to use the nebulizer?
Standard units may work well at home; smaller ones are easier to store in apartments, dorm rooms
and suitcases.
Who will use the nebulizer?
Babies, some young children and elderly patients may require face masks or might be more
bothered by noisy machines.
If it will be used by more than one person, you will need extra nebulizer cups and mouthpieces.
Technical important specification to be under
consideration:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
psi Operating Pressure – it is better to have more pressure
Air Flow (micro liters/min) _it is better to have heavier air flow
Cup Capillary (I.D. microns) – it is better to have a bigger cup capacity
Noise – the less noise the better
Particle size – the smaller particle size the better
Nebulization rate _ Citizen Nebulizer has adjustable rate in 3 level
Weight – the lighter the better/ more portable
Pluggable – it is better if the nebulizer is pluggable to use direct electricity in
addition of battery

Respiratory diseases

According to the
State of the World
Allergy Report of
the World Allergy
Organization,
about 300 million
people worldwide
have asthma,
approximately
50% of whom live
in developing
countries.
Respiratory diseases

Chronic respiratory
diseases (CRD) are
forecast to be
amongst the top five
killers by 2030 and
at present one
person in every
fifteen dies globally
due to the illness,”
said Simon Page,
Group Director of

Middle East, the
organizer of Arab
Health 2011.
TB (Tuberculosis)
• A common bacterial disease
• Caused by mycobacteria, usually ''Mycobacterium tuberculosis'' in
humans.
• Usually affecting the lungs.
• Other parts of the body can also be affected, for example lymph nodes,
kidneys, bones, joints, etc. It is spread through the air, when people who
have the disease cough, sneeze, or spit.
What are the symptoms:
1
- A long-lasting (chronic) cough.
2
- Mucus that comes up when you cough.
3
- Constant coughing, sometimes called "smoker's cough"
4
- Shortness of breath while doing activities.
5
- Excess sputum production.
6
- Feeling like you can't breathe.
7
- Wheezing.
World COPD statistics
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
An estimated 64 million people have COPD worldwide in 2004.
More than 3 million people died of COPD in 2005, which is equal to 5% of all
deaths globally that year.
Almost 90% of COPD deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
The primary cause of COPD is tobacco smoke (through tobacco use or secondhand smoke).
The disease now affects men and women almost equally, due in part to increased
tobacco use among women in high-income countries.
COPD is not curable, but treatment can slow the progress of the disease.
Total deaths from COPD are projected to increase by more than 30% in the next 10
years without interventions to cut risks.
World Asthma statistics
•
•
•
•
•
Some 235 million people currently suffer from asthma. It is the most common
chronic disease among children.
Most asthma-related deaths occur in low- and lower-middle income countries.
The strongest risk factors for developing asthma are inhaled substances and
particles that may provoke allergic reactions or irritate the airways.
Medication can control asthma. Avoiding asthma triggers can also reduce the
severity of asthma.
Appropriate management of asthma can enable people to enjoy a good quality of
life.
