
Introduce yourself
Perform scheduled tasks (giving medications,
starting an IV, wound care)
Address Pain, Plan of care, Duration (wait times)
Additional comfort needs (warm blanket, pillow,
ice, bathroom, etc)
Conduct environmental assessment (ensure call
bell within reach, side rails up, room tidy)
Explain when you or someone else will return
“Is there anything I can do for you before I
leave?”
Why is Hourly Rounding Important?


You have responded to the top
three priorities of all ED
patients…PPD…pain, plan of care,
and duration.
ED patients want to have their pain
controlled; want staff and
physicians to keep them informed
about their plan of care; and want
to be kept informed about delays.
