Greece is the birthplace of…
• Democracy
– Greek word meaning “rule of the people”
Key Terms
• Oligarchy- only a few people have
power
• Aristocrats- rich landowners
• Tyranny- one leader holding power by
force
Athens Creates A Democracy
• Around 500 BC- Cleisthenes- gained
power and overthrew the aristocrats and
developed the world’s first democracy
• Known as the “Father of Democracy”
Athens Democracy
• All citizens in Athens had the right to
participate.
– Citizens were only free men. Not women,
slaves, and foreigners.
• Government decisions made by
majority rule.
• As time passed citizens gained more
power
– Example- serving on juries
Pericles
• Leader of Athens, 460 BC- 429 BC
• Encouraged Athenians to take pride in their
city.
• Believed in participating in government
was just as important as defending Athens in
war.
• Encouraged Athenians to spread democracy.
• Athenians created great works of
literature, art, and columns

• Athenian Democracy
– Direct Democracy: all citizens (males)
made laws and voted on all issues.
• U.S. Democracy
– Representative Democracy: elect officials
to make laws and vote on issues.
