WHY FOCUS ON
CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS?
Substance use disorders are common in people
with mental health disorders
Mental health disorders are common in people
with substance use disorders
Co-occurring disorders lead to worse outcomes
and higher costs than single disorders
Evidence-based models exist and can be
implemented
Providers and consumers want a better system
and services
Few (<10%) people get the treatments they
need.

RECOVERY
REFERS TO THE PROCESS IN
WHICH PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO
LIVE, WORK, LEARN, AND
PARTICIPATE FULLY IN THEIR
COMMUNITIES.
Achieving The Promise:Transforming Mental Health Care in America; The Presidents New Freedom Commission on Mental Health Final Report 2003
For some individuals, recovery is the
ability to live a fulfilling and productive
life despite a disability.
For others, recovery implies the
reduction or complete remission of
symptoms.
Science has shown that hope plays an
integral role in an individual’s recovery.

The Bathtub Test
During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director “how do
you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized?”
"Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a
teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the
bathtub."
"Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would use the
bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup."
"No." said the Director, "A normal person would pull the plug.
Do you want a bed near the window?"
ARE YOU GOING TO PASS THIS ON, OR DO YOU WANT THE
BED NEXT TO MINE?
AND NOW SOME HISTORY
