2016-2017 Project SEARCH @ Seton Northwest Interns
What is Project SEARCH?
Project SEARCH is a 9 month non-paid internship where young adults
with developmental disabilities learn job skills to prepare them for
competitive employment.
It’s a collaborative effort with Seton Healthcare Family, TWC(formerly
DARS), Goodwill Industries, Bluebonnet Community Services, LISD, and
GISD.
It’s a Business model not an Education model.

Eligibility Requirements
LISD or GISD students currently receiving special education services & recommended for 18+ Services.
Have an identified significant disability.
Must be 18-22 years of age.
Have met minimum graduation requirements.
Student whose primary, ongoing needs are not related to a severe or profound emotional or behavioral
deficit.
Must provide Project SEARCH @ Seton NW with proof of immunization records for the following:
* Current Hepatitis B Vaccinations or proof that these vaccinations were made available and rejected by student.
* PPD within the three months immediately prior to student’s on-site placement.
* Chest x-ray within the two years immediately prior to student’s on-site placement, if such student has ever tested positive for
Tuberculosis.
* Measles vaccination for two dates, which must be after January 1, 1968, or positive titer.
* Mumps vaccination for one date, which must be after January 1, 1977, or a positive titer.
* Rubella vaccine or positive titer.
* Varicella (chicken pox) vaccination, titer, or a history of this disease
Characteristics/Skills
Ability to follow simple verbal and/or written directions.
Stamina or ability to build stamina to stand or walk for a minimum of 5 hours per day.
Self sufficient in feeding and toileting or have a plan in place to take care of these needs.
Ability to communicate their wants and needs.
No significant behavioral concerns.
Ability to follow a task list designed for different departments.
Ability to work in all types of environments (Loud, busy, quiet, etc.)
Ability to stay calm in emergency/stressful situations.
Ability to interact with others appropriately.
Ability to accept constructive criticism & make changes with or without supports.
Must have the ability to obtain and keep a paid job with minimal supports by the end of the
internship.
Steps to Complete…
Must have finished all HS credits.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Must be recommended for SELF 18+ Transition Services & complete the paperwork
requirements. (students already in 18+ or those coming in from HS)
Must do intake with TWC(formerly DARS) by November of the year prior to applying for Project SEARCH.
Must have completed all intake paperwork and been accepted into plan with TWC (formerly DARS).
Must complete Project SEARCH application process.
Complete Project SEARCH interview process(if asked to interview)
Before the internship starts, 20 hours of Asset Discovery must be completed with the Goodwill Job Coach/Job Placement Specialist.
Must have at least 1 form of reliable transportation to get to & from hospital to complete Asset Discovery & the requirements of the daily
schedule once internship begins. (No school district transportation is provided)
*If accepted into Project SEARCH, the student and family must agree this will be their last year of eligibility and will
graduate upon completion of internship.

Interns Busy at Work
Departments & Duties
Emergency Room (ER)-prepare rooms for patients; stock & inventory supplies; stock IV carts;
place blankets in warmer; check expiration dates
PACU-clean and stock rooms; escort patients and families to & from the rooms, label &
organize patient folders; fill blanket warmers; clean & dress stretchers; answer phones; prepare
patient icepacks
Pre-Op-cleans & dress stretchers; create patient surgery bags; set up patient beds; escort
patient families to waiting room; fill blanket warmers; answer phones
Mother & Baby-Check supplies for expiration dates; stock & clean rooms; stock & clean utility
room; make baby beds; prepare patient folders; clean & sanitize IV poles
3rd & 4th floors-Make sure all rooms are supplied with all the right equipment & it’s in working
order; organize the equipment room; clean & prep rooms for patients; check expiration dates
Departments & Duties
Environmental Services (EVS)-Sweep and mop floors; collect and properly dispose of trash at nurses
stations, clean windows; clean public restrooms
Materials Management-Stock, organize & inventory all materials for the hospital; check for &
dispose of any expired materials; put labels on bins for materials for reorder
Pharmacy-Check & properly dispose of any expired medications; inventory & charge patient
medications using database software; deliver medications to different departments; labeling &
sealing medications; gown up & clean “clean room”
Seton Healthcare Services-Alphabetize Provider folders; Scan & email documents; Check Provider
folder contents against database for accuracy; Data entry; renaming files in data system
Hospital Transporter (Must independently pass the Medical CPR/First Aid course)-Transport
patients to and from their rooms/departments to other departments for testing & admitting patients
from the ER & bringing them to surgery
Food Services- Prepping food, dishwashing, cooking & serving on the line, delivering trays to the
floors
