Why is the performance of female students improving faster
than male students?
Write down as many as you can remember !
Less Sexist
discrimination
• Women less likely
to be seen as sex
objects. More likely
to be taken
seriously.
Explain if you there
is more of less sex
discrimination in
modern society
compared to 50
years ago.
TIF: Write an example of this
Opportunities at work
• More female M.P’s and
women in positions of
authority in the work place.
More females in traditionally
male dominated professions
and positions
Do you think that women have more
opportunities to work in contemporary
society.
TIF: What would Functionalists or
Marxists say about this?
University
• There are more girls in higher
education than ever before. It is
seen as a norm for girls to go to
University. Years ago only boys
would be expected to go to
University.
Why do you think more women are going
to University now?
TIF: How have universities adapted to more
women?
Decrease in discrimination
• Women more likely to break
through the glass ceiling and
do high paid jobs in positions
of authority rather than
stereotypical women’s work.
1. Explain what is meant by the ‘glass
ceiling’.
2. Do you agree that there has been a
decrease in descrimination and women
are now more able to break through the
‘glass ceiling’?
TIF: Give an example of a woman who has broken the ‘glass ceiling.

Masculinity crisis
• Boys are going through a process of
reassessment of what is seen as ‘masculine’ in
society. Years ago their traditional gender role
was clear as breadwinner.
• Due to globalisation (1980’s) there has been a
decline in heavy industries, such as iron and
steel, engineering etc.
• Results in belief that they will not get a ‘proper
job’= low self esteem and motivation to get
grades!!!
Explain and give an example of a problem that may have caused
a crisis of masculinity in modern society?
TIF: Would Marxists agree or disagree?
Attention to work and motivation
• More likely to suffer from poor
motivation, give less thought to
their futures and the importance
of qualifications.
• Boys give less attention to their
work, less willing to struggle to
over come difficulties, more
easily distracted
Write a statement which either agrees or
disagrees with this idea.
TIF: How do you think same-sex schools
could affect male pupils attention to
work?
Literacy
• Boys have poorer literacy and language skills
• Parents spend less time reading with their
• sons
• Boys hobbies, e.g. Sports, do little to help
develop their language and communication
skills
Explain if you think this statement is true?
Self Esteem
• Boys increasingly suffering
from lack self esteem and
lack confidence. May be
linked to images of
incompetent men found in
advertising, sitcoms and
soaps.
Do you feel that this is an accurate
statement?
How does it compare to women in the
media?
TIF: list an example for both
Sissy/Geek
• Peer pressure and fear of
ridicule and the need to fit in,
all contribute to boys not
being seen to try.
How has peer pressure and ridicule of boys
changed in the last 50 years?
TIF: To what extent do women face the same
ridicule and peer pressure?
Gender stereotypes
