Body Image

Body Image- The way you see and imagine
your body.
What are some things that could possibly
influence a persons body image?
Media (TV, Magazines), Friends, Family
Members, Athletics
Characteristics of an
Unhealthy Body Image




Unhappy with specific parts of the body
Refusal to try new things
Less active in school or sports
Change in eating habits
Building a Healthy Body Image




Avoid media influences!!!
Engage in physical activity
Maintain a healthy, nutritional diet
Use “I” statements
“I” Statement



An “I” statement- tells someone how you feel
by using a statement that begins with the word I
instead of You.
Example: I appreciate your opinion, but I think
my hair looks fine.
Example: I like what I am wearing today and I
am comfortable with how I look.
Eating Disorder


Eating Disorder- Is a disease in which a person
has an unhealthy concern with his or her body
weight and shape.
Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and
Binge Eating Disorder are examples of eating
disorders.
Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia Nervosa- An eating disorder that
includes self-starvation, an unhealthy body
image and extreme weight loss.

Bulimia Nervosa




Bulimia Nervosa- An eating disorder in which
a person eats a large amount of food and then
tries to rid their body of the food.
“Binge and Purge”Bingeing- eating large amounts of food at one
time
Purging- the act of ridding the body of food.

Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder- Is an eating disorder
in which a person has difficulty controlling how
much he or she eats but does not purge.
Obesity

Obesity- A condition in which a person has a
large amount of body fat.

Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable
death in the U.S.
Approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are
overweight, 60 million are obese and 9 million are
extremely obese
Currently, an estimated 65.2 percent of U.S. adults, age
20 years and older, and 15 percent of children and
adolescents are overweight and 30.5 percent are obese.
An estimated 400,000 deaths per year may be
attributable to poor diet and low physical activity
Fad Diets



Fad Diet- Eating plans that promise quick
weight loss with little effort.
Examples: Atkins Diet, South Beach,
Nutrisystem.
These fad diets often require you to buy special
products, such as pills and shakes and don’t
always provide the good sources of essential
nutrients needed in your diet.
Overexercising


Overexercising- When an individual exercises
harder and for a longer period of time than is
healthy.
Risks of overexercising: injury, frequently have
feelings of fatigue.
Use of Laxatives and Diuretics


Laxatives- drugs that cause a person to have
bowel movements.
Diuretics- drugs that cause a person to urinate.




Body Mass Index- A calculation that can help
you find your healthy weight range.

What affects your weight?




Teens go through rapid growth spurts, which
can cause a natural, healthy weight gain.
Hormonal changes
Types of food you eat
Your level of physical activity
Healthy Eating






Plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables every day.
Drink water or natural fruit juice instead of soda
(low sugar drinks).
Lean meat, chicken or fish
Limit the amount of fried foods you eat.
Limit your sweets ( candy, cookies, cakes)
Try to avoid unhealthy fast foods (McDonalds,
Burger King)

will help you stay in your healthy weight range.
