• Zoologists study all
aspects of animal
life, including where
and how animals
live and how they
interact with their
surroundings.
Personal Qualities
• Zoologists should be
observant, inquiring,
imaginative and
open-minded. They
should also be
practical and
accurate, patient,
self-motivated and
logical.
Education
• Zoologists need to
have a Bachelor of
Science (with or
without honors) in
zoology or ecology
to enter the job.
Further
postgraduate study
in relevant subjects
is preferred.
Useful Experience
• It is useful for
zoologists to have
experience in
conservation work
and research and
laboratory work.
Some experience
working with
animals is useful.
Salary
• Zoologists usually
earn between
$30,000 and
$70,000 per year.
Many zoologists
work as university
lecturers and salary
for university
lecturers ranges
from $37,000 to
$76,000.

dissect animals, and sketch animals and
their parts
study the relationship between animals
and their environment
work out ways to control pests
carry out laboratory and fieldwork
work out ways to help conserve species
at risk
give talks to community groups and local
authorities
Training on the Job
• Zoologists gain

job. They may also
attend training
courses in
management and
computer skills.
