Sponges & Cnidarian
Sponges





Invertebrates - animals without back bones.
Simplest of the multicellular animals.
No organ system.
Kingdom – animalia
Phylum - porifera
Structure


Have thousands of
pores which let water
flow through it
continually.
Obtain nourishment and
oxygen from this water.
Obtaining Food


Collar cells-create a
current of water
through the sponge.
Collect food as water
flows through the
body.
Movement


Holdfast - root-like attach the sponge to
rocks.
Adult sponges are
sessile - unable to
move on its own.
Reproduction



Budding
Regeneration
Sexual reproduction
Characteristics of Cnidarian
•
•
•
Invertebrates
All Cnidarian have
radial symmetry
Have tentacles with
stinging cells.
Movement


Most cnidarians are slow-moving or
sessile
Found on shallow ocean floors, the
bottom of ponds or drifting about in
water currents.
The two different forms
of a Cnidarian body
Examples of cnidarians


