Can you?

What is cow Tipping?
• Myth? Urban Legend? Or
Bull Crap?
• The mission, if you
choose to accept it is
to walk up to a
sleeping cow, and tip it
over
• But, is this really
possible?
A Lesson on Animal Behavior
• Cows actually don’t sleep
standing
• They are also very curious
of new people, it is hard
to “sneak up” on a cow
• Even when resting, cows
tend to face different
directions so that
someone in the herd will
be covering each
direction
A Cows Line of Vision
•
A cows line of vision is in
the form of a semi-circle
as shown in diagram
•
This would make it
difficult to even
approach a cow without
making the cow react by
moving away.
•
In order to tip a cow it
would need to be still
with not reaction.
So Theoretically,
is it Possible?
• What is the force
required to tip a cow?
– Force = Mass X
Acceleration
• What does a typical cow
weigh?
–
–
–
–
Newborn Calf: 80 lbs
Heifer: 800-1,000 lbs
Cow: 1,200-1,800 lbs
Bull: 1,700-2,100
• By the way, that is over a
ton!
Force= Ma
• Mass ( 1,600 lbs)
– Convert to kg (725.7 kg)
• Acceleration = gravity
– 9.8 m/s
• (725.7)(9.8) = 7,111.86
• However, this be the
force just to drop a
cow…Not tip it
An Unexpected Added Force
– Cows lean- when
pressure is applied to a
cow, they will lean into it
exerting an pressure
back onto the object.
– This makes the
resistance of the cow
and extra force to be
reckoned with.
– The force applied BY the
cow would be equal to
that being applied TO
the cow an the attempt
of tipping.
So How Much Force Can People Exert?
• F=MXA
• M = 150 pound person
– (68.04 kg)
• A = 6 miles per hour
(average jogging speed)
– (2.68 m/s)
•
•
•
•
•
F=MA
F=(150)(60)
F=(68.04)(2.68)
F=182.35 N
A 182.35 force is
exerted by a person of
150 lbs jogging at 6
mph.
Scientific Research
• Margo Lillie
– Doctor of zoology at the
Universtiy of British
Columbia
– Concluded would
require an exertion of
2,920 newtons
• Would take at least 2 very
strong people
What new insight does this topic
provide to you
•
•
•
•
Tipping a cow is not as easy as it sounds.
Be able to run faster than the bull is a must.
Maybe tractor tipping will be easier.
Being able to calculate the cow’s size and knowing
your equations do come in handy When your just out
having fun with your friends!!!!!
• When it comes to “solving myths”
do your research and know all the
factors that are in play.
