Chapter 11
L11-4 Notes:
Probability and Area
Probability and Area
The probability of landing in a specific region
of a target is the ratio of the area of the
specific region to the area of the target.
Example 1
Find the probability that a randomly thrown dart
will land in the shaded region of the dartboard.
Example 2
Find the probability that a randomly thrown dart will land
in the shaded region of each dartboard.
If a dart is randomly thrown 400 times at the dartboard,
about how many times will the dart land in the shaded
region?
On Your Own…
1. Find the probability that a randomly thrown
dart will land in the shaded region of the
dartboard.
2. If a dart is randomly thrown 640 times at the
dartboard, about how many times will the dart
land in the shaded region?

L11-5 Notes:
Probability of Independent Events
Vocabulary
Two or more events in which the outcome of
one event does not affect the outcome of the
other event are independent events.
The probability of two independent events is
found by multiplying the probability of the first
event by the probability of the second event.
Example 1
A coin is tossed, and the spinner shown is spun.
Find the probability of tossing heads and
spinning a 3.
Example 2
Amanda placed 2 red marbles and 6 yellow
marbles into a bag. She selected 1 marble
without looking, replaced it, and then selected a
second marble. Find the probability that each
marble selected was not yellow.
On Your Own…
A coin is tossed and a number cube is rolled.
Find the probability of each event.
1. P(tails and even)
2. P(heads and less than five)
