SECOND LAW OF
THERMODYNAMICS
Studens have stated the first law of thermodynamics
and defined the concepts:
heat, thermodynamic system, internal energy and work
done in thermodynamic system.
After separation into groups students got working
sheets and assignments.
Member of each group presented their
conclusions and wrote them on the blackboard.
For homework they had to find some examples
that prove those conclusions.
One student presented his homework which included
example of irreverzibile process. Other students thought
of more natural irreversible processes. After showing
students PowerPoint presentation about entropy
they defined entropy as general law.
The total entropy of the universe is constantly
INCREASING!!!
To understand concept of equilibrium and
probability in interpretation of entropy
students performed experiment.
All the results of experiments have been
put in the table and then they´ve put that
data on millimeter paper.
On prepared transparent sheet for graphoscope
with axes, two students have done plotting during
the class.
These were conclusions :
the most probable state is 5 heads and 5
tails
the least probable state is all heads or all
tails
The second law of thermodynamics,
in terms of probability, reduces to
the statement that those processes
occur which are most probable.
That way students learned and
understood concept of probability in
interpretation of entropy.
Discussing about heat
death of Universe
students got a greater
insight into concept of
entropy and analogy
that can be used in
many other scinces.
For homework they explored differences
beetween theory of evolution and concept of
entropy.
Then they wrote an individual essay on:
„Evolution Vs. Second Law Of Thermodynamics“
using previous knowledge.
Students discussed about global warming and
thermal pollution, after watching a short movie
about global warming.
The aim was to rise awarenes about human
impact on nature and climate changes.
The table of energy resources was showen to
students and we have discussed each source.
The aim was to rise awareness about preserving
environment and future of energy resources as
well as of the planet.
In course evaluation form they
wrote that they liked that way of
work.
