probability distributions. Special cases: binomial,
Poisson, hypergeometric, normal, exponential
• Expected values and variances of r.v.’s, linear
combinations
• Sampling distributions: sample mean, proportions,
variance. Standard error, Central limit theorem

Further topics
• Bivariate and multivariate relationships:
prediction, modelling, regression etc.
• Time series analysis
• Reliability of components and systems
• Design and analysis of surveys
• Design and analysis of experiments
• Signal processing: speech, image, video
Microphotograph of a thin section. The
colours of different grains are produced
due to Birefringence(Double refraction).
To fit ellipses to grains a clear idea about grain
boundary is necessary.
Strain Measurement
• Magnitude of deformation is a marker of strain.
• Hence to measure strain we have to measure ellipse
parameters, namely Major and Minor Axes and
orientation.
• Ellipse parameters are obtained by fitting ellipses to
grains.
Good luck in the exams!
