ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING
CENTRAL TENDANCY
CTAP LESSON PLAN
BY
JAIME N. YEAROUS
ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENTRAL TENDANCY
LESSON DESCRIPTION:
•CONTENT AREA: 6TH GRADE MATH
•STUDENTS WILL EXPLORE THE MEASURES OF
CENTRAL TENDANCY: MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE,
AND OTHER RELATED TERMS
•INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY, COOPERATIVE
GROUPS, AND INTEGRATIVE TECHNOLOGY
TIMELINE:
• APPROXIMATELY TWO-THREE WEEKS
ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENRAL TENDANCY
MATH CONTENT STANDARDS FOR CALIFORNIA
PUBLIC SCHOOLS: 6TH GRADE MATH
STATISTICS, DATA ANALYSIS, AND PROBABILITY
•1.0 Students compute and analyze statistical measures
for data sets.
•1.1 Students compute the range, mean, median, and
mode of data sets
1.4 Students know why a specific measure of central
tendency provides the most useful information in a
given context
ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENTRAL TENDANCY
•GIVEN A REAL SITUATION, STUDENTS WILL DESIGN A
DATA COLLECTION SHEET AND RECORD DATA IN AN
ORGANIZED MANNER.
•GIVEN A SET OF DATA STUDENTS WILL:
•COMPUTE THE RANGE, MEAN, MEDIAN, AND MODE.
• CONSTRUCT AN ACCURATE FREQUENCY GRAPH
THAT INCLUDES CORRECTLY LABELED AXES AND
AN APPROPRIATE TITLE.
• PRESENT A CLEAR AND ADEQUATE REPORT
SUMMARIZING THE RESULTS OF THEIR STUDY.

•MEASURES ACTIVITY INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY
•SURVEY SAYS ENABLING ACTIVITY
•NFL STATISTICS CULMINATING ACTIVITY

• NFL PROJECT
• NFL PROJECT RUBRIC

STUDENTS WILL COLLECT REAL DATA FROM THE
http://www.nfl.com/ WEBSITE

•MICROSOFT WORD
• MICROSOFT EXCEL
•INTERNET
ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENTRAL TENDANCY
PAST: I REVISEDTHE NFL ACTIVITY BY:
•ALLOWING STUDENTS TO WORK IN GROUPS
DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS, COMPUTER
ACCESS, AND EASE OF GRADING
•CHOOSING WHICH TWO TEAMS THE
STUDENTS WOULD ANALYZE, INSTEAD OF
ALLOWING THEM TO CHOOSE (GRADING)
FUTURE: I MIGHT ADD ONE MORE ENABLING
ACTIVITY TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR THE
FINAL. THE ACTIVITY WOULD INVOLVE
AVERAGING NBA BOX SCORES.
ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENTRAL TENDANCY
• 6th grade students are the target audience
• Implemented during the Statistics and Data Analysis Unit
• Computer lab setting required if used for
whole class instruction.
• May be used as a differentiated
curriculum unit for GATE students.

ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENTRAL TENDANCY
•OVERALL STUDENT IMPROVEMENT ON ASSESSMENTS
•STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO MAKE REAL-LIFE
APPLICATIONS
• FOUNDATION HAS BEEN SET FOR STUDENTS TO
EXPLORE MORE COMPLEX CENTRAL TENDENCY
CONCEPTS
ABOVE AVERAGE: EXPLORING CENTRAL TENDANCY
• DESIGNING A WEB-BASED UNIT IS VERY
TIME CONSUMING
• DESIGNING A WEB-BASED UNIT WOULD BE A GREAT
ACTIVITY FOR GATE STUDENTS
• WEB-BASED UNITS ARE HIGHLY MOTIVATING AND
EFFECTIVE LEARNING TOOLS FOR STUDENTS
WHEN IMPLEMENTED PROPERLY
