What is communication?
Communication is a range of purposeful
behavior which is used with intent within the
structure of social exchanges, to transmit
information, observations, or internal states,
or to bring about changes in the immediate
environment. Verbal as well as nonverbal
behaviors are included, as long as some
intent, evidenced by anticipation of
outcome can be inferred

Why are we having this class?
The problem with communication ... is the
illusion that it has been accomplished
Clear and unambiguous messaging involves
awareness and effort from
sender and receiver
Communication is accomplished when
sender and receiver understand the same

Why are we having this class?
In a recent survey of recruiters from
companies with more than 50,000
employees, communication skills were cited
as the single most important decisive factor in
choosing managers. The survey, conducted
by the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz
Business School, points out that
communication skills, including written and
oral presentations, as well as an ability to
work with others, are the main factors
contributing to job success.
